[MV Review] 2NE1 - I Love You

2NE1 are back with a new single guaranteed to make Blackjacks cum buckets (not like they needed any provocation). My intros are getting lamer and lamer, so just hit READ MORE already.

I Love You's MV is at first blush simply a slideshow of random closeups, posing, and walking around aimlessly with a bit of writhing thrown in here and there. Boy, are you wrong. Upon closer inspection, I have discovered a whole new world of symbolism and meaning to this MV. And I didn't need no help from no stinkin' Blackjacks neither. It's actually a storyline MV broken up by the aforementioned random closeups, posing, and walking around in order to prevent our mortal minds from collapsing at the weight of it all.

ILY's storyline is gripping and full of mindbending symbolism that shoves a big "FUCK YOU" up Christopher Nolan's Inception. CL plays herself in in this soul-searching quest with chilling ramifications for the world. Here is a series of gifs I compiled that summarize I Love You's storyline.

If you managed to make it this far, I commend you for your astounding force of will. It's one of the best storylines I've seen to date, 2 thumbs up. It definitely blows anything YG has produced in the last decade out of the water, let alone the shit everyone ELSE is pushing out. Truly inspiring work from the original, fresh, innovative, original global fresh superstars that are also original and innovative.

The rest of the MV's shenanigans are surprisingly palatable. After the clusterfucks that were I am the Best + Ugly and the blatant anti-Japanese sentiment of Hate You, it's nice to see 2NE1 take a step back and give us something easily digestible like Lonely was. Everyone's hair and makeup look decent, and there aren't any many garish outfits dug out of Jeremy Scott's capslocked asshole. Minzy is the hands-down standout in the MV, with Dara actually coming in at second (Skrillex hair and all). I do feel the need to bitch out whoever thought that rattyass blonde bob wig on Minzy was a good idea though.

Writhe, writhe like there's no tomorrow.
However, the song itself fails to live up to the high bar set by the storyline MV. It's quite frankly a jumble of different song concepts, tempos, beats, whathave you. A veritable house of Legos, so to speak. It sort of chugs along until the second chorus where it clashes the most offensively with the pacing of the song established up til then. Worst offender goes to CL's vocal run (more on that later) that culminates in an autotuned "Bring it back" that serves to literally bring the song back to the beginning. It makes no sense at all.

I will give credit where credit is due though. Minzy sounds AMAZING in her bits to the point where you might even prefer her to replace Bom as main vocal. Dara's verses were surprisingly good, and I honestly wouldn't mind if they continued this trend of lightly autotuned singtalkrapping for her in the future. Bom wasn't bad, but nor was she good either. The little rap breakdown at the end was kinda nice, but again, it feels roughly tacked on to the house of Legos like a Megabloks chimney.

Spotlight must be shown on how incredibly grating CL's voice was for me in this song, especially since she's being used so much in 2NE1's songs lately. She's a decent vocalist within her range, but she sings like she's trying to be the next Adele or something. She reaches for notes she cannot hope to grasp, and she attempts vocal embellishments that make her sound like a wailing cat. Special mention must be brought to her vocal run at the psuedoclimax of the song. I cried #thugtears at how bad that shit was.

LONG LIVE DARUGGIN COUPLE
TL;DR:
Amazingly subtle storyline MV for an okay song composed like a house of Legos.

+
  • surprisingly normal concept
  • Minzy's writhing (Fuck off, Chris)
  • Minzy's parts
  • Dara's singtalkrapping bits
  • JJANGBAK storyline
-
  • CL'S VOICE
  • jumbled composition that feels like 3 songs stapled together
  • snoozeworthy use of Bom
  • Minzy's hideous wig
  • CL writhing in a catsuit
  • too much CL period
I give this song a 2 out of 5. Minzy and Dara were not enough to save this shit.

  2. Too much CL in this. YG needs to stop showing favorites.
Minzy is like the saving grace plus she is so damn hot.

  3. This song is just like so many of the songs 2Ne1 has released, it has a few interesting things about to make it worth a listen, maybe even two, but in the end it doesn't leave you the enjoyment of a "good song". It applies to so many of the songs they have released, Fire, Lonely, It hurts, IATB even, they all have that bittersweet taste.

Also, no matter how hot Minzy's body is, she's still a damn blowfish. I would still rather fuck Dara or even plastic explosive. I will not fall to your peer pressure

  4. CL > Minzy

Minzy is so disgusting, trying to act sexy and shit. THe only reason she is bearable to look at is because of all that makeup. I mean the same goes for CL, but she actually pulls it off. Minzy in this video is like a walrus giving a lap dance.

  5. I really like Dara's hair for this comeback. Actually her parts in the songs were my favorite as well.

The song is ehhhhhhhhhhhhh though. It has interesting composition, but it is no where near as strong as their previous efforts. And I do love 2NE1.

    1. I was expecting some SNSD reference right at the end of the comment, but...well carry on

  6. I think Dara's hair looks good. She's still annoying though. I wouldn't agree with her verses being good, she's the least convincing of all of them to me.

  7. I was almost ashamed to mention how much I liked Dara's bits.

  8. I thought it was terribly boring. I don't remember the song at all except for the I-love-you's in the chorus (unless that -was- the whole chorus).

  9. I agree with almost the entire article...except for CL's gifs. Made me cringe like shit. I just can't imagine how a brutally cocaine-induced bitch is that carnally deprived. It's akin to Niel as a lead star in a romantic movie.

    1. Also, I don't think anyone here would deny the fact that this song is 1 word, 6 letters: S-L-O-P-P-Y

  10. The song sounds like a bad mashup of IATB, Lonely & Fantastic baby.
Not gonna say i totally disliked it but at times the song just got too much and too busy.

The MVs only saving grace was Minzy in that semi see through top grindin' on the wall. YUM!

    1. Minzy's crisp voice blending well with the tune of her parts salvaged the song amirite?

    2. Nailed it. My bro told me Minzy can definitely dethrone Bom from being 2ne1's voice, then he asked me if CL is actually 2ne1's face...

  11. I hated this song and the video was painful for me to watch, honestly.

  12. Is it just me or is CL saying "jerk it everyday" at 2:08?

    1. Probably.

Ha ha! Had to listen to that part again upon reading this.
Well, CL's writhing on the bed somewhere in the MV...she can say j*rk it everyday.

  13. For me, Plasticbag Bom's voice is the worst. Especially when she going, "느끼 전에 에 에 에 에 에 에~~~~~~~~~~~" or some shit like that before the chorus. SO ANNOYING.

Not to mention that she was like the most uncharismatic member in that MV. Her face is just..... no words.

  14. Song was a snoozefest and so was the MV. BUT THAT MINZY GIF, COT DAYUMMMM! That part made the MV worth watching.

    1. And now since it's in gif form, I saved you the trouble of watching the MV at all.

  15. Why doesn't Minzy get more song time? I mean really Teddy Park I understand CL is willing to eat the frost at the end of your dick. But come on dude its quite clear who is the real starlet. And who is just a tranny with a good tuck.

Minzy deserves better than this. I didn't make far in the MV. To much CL for my taste. A flat face bom wasn't easy to watch either. Nor that creature called dara. The song was a hot fucking mess. Even the "eh eh eh" couldn't save it and usually it does. Fucking legos

    1. Minzy is great but has nearly no stage presence.

  16. And all the Blowjobs act like this is going to be the next big hit in Murrrica ololo

  17. Now,if they could just cut off CL from the MV and the song...I might just like it.

  18. I thought the song was ehhhhhhhhhh, and I usually like 2ne1 songs. Was expecting more out of the mv and I'm kind of mad bom got less lines. It happy data at least got her spotlight. Not a big fan of CL starting to sing. Someone needs to tell the stylist that CLs blonde wig was a big fat NO and so was Minzi's bob. I give the song a 3 out of 5 and the mv a 2 out of 5. Some scenes honestly didn't fit the song.

  19. The MV is indeed great, but would be greater if it was not punctuated with CL here and there. The song, although I like the balladish tempo, is somewhat a disappointment. Minzy's parts are great, though, no doubt about it. But seriously, CL needs to at least try to sing better. Dara's singing here is a great improvement from her singing waaaayyy back when she was in the Philippines (Her dancing improved a lot too, though I Love You's MV did not show it.) As for Bom...just the same old Bom.
