Honestly If a foreigner went on a show and slanted their eyes and said all Asian people like to eat rice, Asian people would take offense to it. Stereotypes aren’t funny.
Uh...that shit happens in every day life. C'mon, I've been asked by white people if I've ever eaten a God damn dog. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but if stereotypes are done for comedy, they're usually funny. That's why Chappelle's Show was one of my favorite shows. Yes, outside of comedy it is insensitive. Anyway...
It would be nice, MORE OFTEN, to see different races in the Korean media.
Why? Seriously, why? Korea is full of....you know....what is it....KOREANS. Of course you're going to see some God damn Koreans on fucking Korean TV. What the fuck are you expecting? You wanna see a God damn telenova on KBS 2 and Oprah on MBC or some shit?
The standard Idea of beauty is Pale skin. The Lighter, The Brighter, The Better in other words.
God damn, it's not because of white people that Asians feel this way about pale skin. You could have done a simple Google search to find the reason why.
As you all know K-Pop was HEAVILY influenced by African American music. So why aren’t we in their MV or why aren’t their many Black K-Pop singers?
Jesus Christ, the stupidity is astounding. First, we know Kpop is influenced by African American music. Modern pop is, we know. It's like you want some God damn credit for Psy's Gangnam Style or something.
Regarding the second point of the quote, maybe because most of the black people in Korea are in the military. It's not like you're going to see a military member in a MV. C'mon, THINK. Why would there be black Kpop singers? I don't see the damn logic in black singers leaving America where they dominate the scene and leave for Korea's music market. They'd be giving up millions of dollars, worldwide fame, and would have to learn another language. I know this fangirl would retort with "But what about Chad Future? He's white and is debuting in Korea." Chad Future is a fucking troll and everyone knows it.
Black people, it's fine to like Kpop, but don't expect Koreans to change everything for your sake. There are black people in the American music industry, so if you want to root for people that are the same race, you're listening to the wrong God damn music.
" 'But what about Chad Future? He's white and is debuting in Korea.' Chad Future is a fucking troll and everyone knows it."

ReplyDeleteYou chop this up a bit. The first about sterotypes is true to any minority race. I mean black people are seen as ghetto and gangsta. White people are plain and boring. Latino people are sex aholics and ride in civics. Personally I prefer a hyundai fuck toyota to expensive.
The second comment about Asian prefering lighter skin. Uh you fucking Asians did that one yourself. You fail to show if the author even mention about white people. You assume which makes you look like an ass. Even an article that akp ran talk about half/korean singer Michelle Lee and how she wouldn't fit in. Mostly do to her darker skin color and how koreans prefer to see lighter skin beauty. Next to every god damn foreign inspired kpop vid having majority fucking white people. I'm getting mix singals here. Its pointing to a strong discrimination of those dark and to ethnic looking.
Thrid response I agree 100%. I don't see the point of ANY foreigner in kpop. Its korean music not for the west. You're just part of the fucking ride. I don't like how international fans who are non-Asian believe that do to influence of music cuture. They should be allowed in kpop.
Or maybe its more of seeing black people in kpop vids not being shown in a degrading stereotypical way vs actually being able to perform. I think this can go over peoples' heads a bit. Even those who respond in defense.
I understand the fustration of some black kpop fans. You are seeing an increase of white foreigners in mvs along side kpop stars. It would make any fan who didn't fit that racial category jealous and insecure. When you already live in a nation that makes you an outsider base upon skin color. And youb see it in another foreign nation do the same. it makes you wonder. Was racism the best export from western culture? It can't be all Koreans ignorant fault or traditional cultural bias behavior. Western culture is no where near racial acceptance. So why point the fingure of shame at the east or south east Asian nations? Maybe they suck with the liberal speach of 'tolerance.' Which is dumb as fuck to teach anyone to accept race in the first place.
their is something more deeper than what is being superficially sum up here.
"Even in music videos you sometimes see Caucasian people, but what about Black people or Latin@s?"
ReplyDeleteYou fo real nigga? Haven't you seen the latest kpop trend? BLACK PEOPLE. Beast - Beautiful night, BoA - Only one and WG - Like Money ALL HAVE BLACKIES!
"“Yeah Beyonce is pretty for a black girl.” and I think to myself there are LOTS of GORGEOUS black women out there!"
The existence or lack thereof of a large amount of beautiful black women has nothing to do with the quote you responded to. bitch

DeleteBlack Kpop fans don't want to see blacks guest star in MVs. They want them to be the main focus, overshadowing the actual artist.
Delete@lumpor
DeleteThat one token black person bitch shut the fuck up. Next its well I got one black friend that apporves line. I fucking that shit most than koreas white out in mvs.
@antikpopfangirl
How do you know what black kpop fans want? I didn't realize you were the spokes person. I bow a 90 degree angle at your direction.
Black Kpop fans always want more. It doesn't just apply to them, it replies to every minority in every situation. Their appetite for whatever they want is insatiable. They always want more.
DeleteAlso TTS-Twinkle
DeleteUmm not really. I'm a black male kpop fan and while you all make valid points, I can't come to 100% disregard the author's points and argument ._. Seeing one-three black people in a video isn't necessarily saying that's the new "trend" in the video vs the hundreds of white people you see in the videos =_= Asianjunkie very well made comments on this long before, though it focused more on the lack thereof of black females in the videos. Personally, I don't mind any of it at all. Racism and 'preferences' are everywhere and are in everyone. I acknowledge this. So saying black kpop fans always want more is full of bullshit and deserves just as many ignorant commentary as you gave the author >>
DeleteIf it was only koreans in kpop then fine but they are actually making an effort to include white people. If they only include white people what wrong with askin why only whites? Who's asking them to change everythong for our sake? Maybe treat us as fairly as you would say a white person. Its not like the kpop idols who are putting foreigners in there videos are Filming in korea, they are going to other parts of the world and only including whites, not even other asians.
ReplyDeleteAlso just because that racist shit happens everyday dont make it right.
DeleteLife's not fair.
DeleteAnyway, how many black people actually want to be in a Korean MV? 3?
@antokpopfangirl
DeleteIts like how many Asian Americans actually want to be in American media not replace by some white person. Or totally riding on Far East Movement "like a G6" on billboards that seems to be a one time deal.
I'm so tired AAs bitch about the lack of actors, actress, and musicians state side. Cry me the han river I haven't gone boating in a while.
Can work both ways
It doesn't really. There are Asians that live in America and want to see themselves represented. I think they want over representation, which is something we could probably agree on. Asian Americans make up around 5% of the US population. To see them anywhere in the media is already a success imo.
DeleteFEM's Like a G6 was only popular because of the female singer they featured. The rappers in FEM blow ass.
Life's not fair is not really a good excuse but okay.
DeleteHow many black people want to be in a kpop MV? Well you don't really have to be a fan of kpop to want work. If they are looking for dancers, they can find black dancers, if they are looking for models they can find black models, if they are looking for extras they can find that too, if these people are looking for work in that feild, they will take what they are given if they are not well established. I don't think blacks want to be over represented in Korean media, at least I personally don't. What I would like though is that if they are going to use foreigners in their videos it shouldn't always be white. They have global fans of every race, obviously people are going to feel a little left out if they are only aknowledging the white fans. It seems more now that they aren't even including their own race anymore. That's a problem. If Koreans stuck with Koreans/Asians this would not blow up, this rant and many others like it is not out of the blue. Notice all the complaints started happening after videos like "high high" and Bad boy", why because they are making a effort to include only whites for the most part which is going to spark controversy among races who feel left out.If they are going to hire like 20 white models, then yes I do sometimes wonder why they cannot find at least one black model, or where did all the Asians go? I feel like its valid question. Especially since some of these videos are happening outside of Korea and gearded to a more global audience.
Also they are more than just influenced by black/hiphop sub culture, they appropiated it to no end. When BIGBANG was on world star, the people on that site recognized the appropriation right away and were upset about it and they are not kpop fans, now I dont agree with how they chose to express those feelings since some of them were down right racist, but I understand the point they were making. If your a pop artist trying to act like a hardcore hiphop artist obviously people are going call bullshit.
They have caucasians in MVs because:
Delete1 - white chicks are the trophy accessory of choice for kpop male artists
2 - kpop has started to decline in its number one overseas market, Japan. They need to expand to other countries and (rightly or wrongly) they're trying to expand to the west.
Most western countries may be multicultural societies but they're still predominantly white. Need to get those little white girls ready to hand over their pocket money.
@antikpopfangirl
DeleteI'm not even asian but your response boil my blood. Typical and quite pathetic. Should have never posted this topic. You have no fucking idea what you are talking about.
@luvfades11t
True bb bad boy video was very pop yet they desperatly make it hip hop. I was confuse and laughing at the same time. But korea really doesn't understand double standards in hip hop culture.
@cabiai
Using white women as a trophy item is fuck up in it self. I'm sure not every white women wants to be treated like prize cattel. I just don't see the image of even white foreigners as a positive. Why should black sette for the same garbage?
@cabiai- i realize that, however this article is making it seem like blacks want to be represented more than koreans themselves and thats just not the case. Blacks don't like the idea of foriegners equal whites only. Im just providing an explanation for what we feel. This article got it all wrong.
Delete@mybiasbeatsyourbias- i realize that to but thats not to stop people from calling that shit out when they see it. They shouldn't immitate things they have no clue about besides the images they see on TV.
And by we i mean just the ones who are upset since not all black kpop fans think the same way about this and i don't speak for all black people.
Delete@luvfades115
DeleteTrue I mean its funny because I always read Asian comments about not being overly generalize. Yet when comes to speaking about another race outside their own especially if its another minority race. They over generalize like antikpopfangirl did and become just as equally offensive. As well expose their own prejudice.
Walk in a day another man shoes would do wonders for this world.
"And by we i mean just the ones who are upset since not all black kpop fans think the same way about this and i don't speak for all black people."
DeleteQuoted for emphasis. The average black fan don't care about being no dang kpop video. Only the ones who need to be validated by Koreans do.
Of course if it werent for black ppl, kpop would be trot. And this reminds me of how Koreans claim that japanese stole their culture, which isnt true.
ReplyDeleteI use to reading how japanese don't want kpop. Anti hallyu protestors.
DeleteThe Japanese have stolen from Korean culture, but it was centuries ago, which is what the ones that aren't dumbasses are referring to. The dumbasses saying that Japan stole from Korean culture within the past 100 years are dumbasses.

Twinkle? Pft. Secret's Madonna video has three black guys playing instruments.
DeleteCause madonna is a jazz influence song. Even nazi during the war kelp imprison blacks and use them for entertainment. Apparently only blacks play the best jazz. I wish I was being a bitch but I'm not. That is historic truth. Seeing a kpop vid can't help but laugh a little.
DeleteThat is a gross exaggeration. For example, there were plenty of amazing white jazz musicians in jazz history. Bix Beiderbecke, Eddie Condon, Gene Krupa, to name a few. all of these guys are not black, great jazz players, and several were credited for being the first to experiment with certain styles and instruments even.
DeleteAnd I'm sure the Nazis did more with their black POWs than keep them around to hear the "best" jazz.
I've been to germany and just like they kelp certain jewish temples up as remebering the jews. The did use imprsion blacks and those who live there (very small numbers) in entertainment.
DeleteIn fact prior to the war black who immigrated from America to Africa to Europe was because of the jazz craze. A black musician was better of performing in european than america. Until hiltler came along and fuck it up.
Jazz was a black genre but no jazz musician before 50s receive their due credit. Blacks didn't have the right to claim their own music and often times perform for blacks. It is the same for blues.
Also one of first rock guitarist was chuck berry and he was black during 50s and 60s. He was never given the credit long after his death but he inspired jimi hendrix.
^ Yup, human experimentation, death squads or being worked to death.
Delete@mybiasbeatsyourbias you're on fire lol + I agree with most of what you wrote.

I know what you mean hun.
DeleteI know you're not anonymous anymore, but this really takes the cake
DeleteThis blog post is a bloody mess. I think it backfired on your ass antikpopfangirl.
ReplyDeleteI agree with some of your statements like
"I don't see the damn logic in black singers leaving America where they dominate the scene and leave for Korea's music market."
but some others are just as ignorant as you want to make people believe the fan's rant is.
Mess and flop.
Blacks dominace in america took centuries. From coming through the back door. Dealing with black face. Only having roles as the negro slave and maid. To actually having black own production film companies and music labels.
DeleteBlack dominace happen because blacks pretty much had to fight for their spot in hollywood. Key word FIGHT and not just for scrapes. No Asian mention the history of black entertainment. They see what it is today yet have no clue were it started. Same for hispanics who are on the rise now. We fought for it I guess Asian should fight for it to. An not support the garbage thatis there now.
But that's to pretentious
Oh noes, I don't agree with what you think, so my ideas automatically flopped. Oh no.
DeleteIt doesn't matter that you disagree with me. At least you're using your brain. But the point is, Kpop isn't going to change for black people, which is what this fan wanted.
The fan seems to have taken offense for Korea's preference to whiter skin. That shit has to do with status. The lower class Koreans back in the day had to work outside, which made their skin darker. The upper class sat inside all day and had lighter skin. The preference for lighter skin comes from that, not because all Koreans think white people are more attractive than black people.
Like I said, I'm not saying some of her deluded statements were right, I'm saying some of your's are ignorant. Like this one:
Delete1. I can completely understand why that fan would take offense in their culture being ridiculed on TV in Korea. Specially because it's not exactly like in Chapelle's show as you stated. There are not only are stereotypes being displayed but most of the focus lies on how they are physically portrayed = not pretty (black face blabla, big lips, nose etc.). And I'm completely ignoring the fact that in you example, Chapelle is a member of stated black community. A Korean making fun of a black people is a far more sensitive issue than said black comedian doing it.
At least regarding this aspect she/he/the fan is right. And as someone so idealistically said "Just because racism is common, doesn't make it right". Which means the fan has every right to rant about it. Just as you would have the right to rant about your "eating dog" episode, you simply chose not to.
2. I do know where Korea's preference for white/pale skin comes from. It may have been for status in the older days but you can hardly argue like that these days. You see it all over variety shows where idols are invited, the preference for pale skin as an indicator for beauty is appalling. "Pale", or whatever you want to call it, stands nowadays for pretty and not for social status. It would be just as delusional to argue that way.
With that said, I couldn't care less if there are any black or white people in Korean dance-in-a-box music videos.
But yeah, this blog post is still a mess boo.
@antikpopfangirl
DeleteAnd nobody is disagreeing with that factor korean prefer lighter skin. Its the same among black also to prefer lighter skin blacks also among hispanics. What? Do you honestly think this shit is so unique to your culture?
This stems far back to slavery which was a major global trade. The idea of race came from that as an oppressor. In Asian it is used in similar fashion but instead of the negro it is of status quo.
But to say that the western influence of race doesn't hasn't had an effect on kpop is wrong. It does on the perspective of blacks being view as a lessor form even within their own society. Despite of political leadership and enterpernuership.
Flip it, this is the struggle Asians have on the west. On economis and education scale Asian have achieve much but socially and polictically their native counsins do far better. The AA is a silent race in America politics and media.

ReplyDeletelmao
ReplyDeleteAlthough her rant was somewhat misguided, I think it's a bit rich for you to talk about race. I'd stick to the delusional fans, because this girl actually brings up some good points.
ReplyDeleteMainly the issue for a lot of fans is that current K-pop IS so heavily influenced by Black culture but then Korean turns around and does stuff like black face. Then, Korea gets mad at Asian stereotypes and racially motivated insults but continues to perpetuate it in their country. Now people wouldn't care if it wasn't for the fact that Korea desperately wants to export their culture to the point of grasping at even the slightest mention of K-pop in Western media.
It's the hypocrisy that's aggravating. International K-pop fans want to love K-pop but it is frustrating when Korea pulls shit like black face, netizens insulting Tiger's son and people like CL claiming that Korean artists are the most dedicated in the world. It is supremely disingenuous.
I think she should have been making this point rather than calling for better Black representation in K-pop.
Nevertheless, you should leave these sort of articles for AsianJunkie.
You're putting words in her mouth.
DeleteAnd we can write about whatever the hell we want to write about. AsianJunkie does not have the monopoly over "race articles."
The Cheat has spoken.
DeleteWell spoken. You should have written the rant D:... I'm sure the fan is still a bit craycray and not only misguided in her choice of words.
DeleteI can't help but disagree with kpop going to the west. Korea isn't ready for that type of shit. I feel like if kpop doesn't reach the expectations or its own hype. People are gonna blame its a race issue. The west is just to racist to see an Asian soloist or groups chart.
DeleteYeah maybe kpop needs to allow a diverse group of foreigners to even be extras in their MVs. But does that really change anything?
Let alone have more Asian Americans and Asian Europeans in western media without being stereotypical or tight cast to certain type of roles as support. Never leading. Its like this for that. The whole issue becomes a joke.
Frankly kpop for the shake of it being kpop stay in Asia. Back off global and just to tour. Japanese pop, rock and metal artists do gloabl tours and release music on iTunes without all the hype. I feel if people like kpop then they'll listen regardless of who or what influence it. Putting foreigners in mvs and majority them being white you are opening pandora's box of racial maddness that koreans are no were near ready to deal with.
Kpop making this big mistake in thinking that by adding whire or black foreigners in their music video it would increase their appeal. So fucking wrong. I liked kpop cause it was sung in korean and well the koreans. If I wanted to see people who kinda look like me or black or white I'll just watch MTV from the west.
What pisses me off more when Asians try to superficially sum up the dominace of black entertainers. I hate it when black kpop fans do this to. Hip hop wasn't the only form of black music. Its was jazz, blues, gosphel and folk that came way prior. Blacks had to earn their spot.
I don't think anyone over at Asianjunkie is gonna take the time and look into the details of black entertainment. How it rise from white dominated entertainement, the prejudice, its expansion in europe during 40s and 50s, afrocentric appeal in 60s and 70s to 80s hip hop,pop and r&b sector. then focus on what Asian and Asian Americans can learn from it to benefit their presence in western entertainment and defeat racial bias obstacles.
Why are you so interested in being represented.. the "kpop going to west" thing is being done for the whites, that much is pretty clear. If it was being done for the blacks they would have focused more on the African countries. Its not personal.. its just where the money is.
DeleteAll i see is basically you as a black fan asking for validation from a korean community.. whyyyyy???? why do u care so much
If your interested in racial injustice like blackface and such then its completely fair.. but asking for representation is like saying you want to be accepted as a part of it.. either stick with racial injustice or dont watch it
>___> Great, now who can I label as worse.....Koreaboos or Kpop black fangirls? Lol.
ReplyDelete"It would be nice, MORE OFTEN, to see different races in the Korean media."
Coming from a Korean, it's rather idiotic of people to think there should be more different races in the K-showbizz. Anyone who knows a thing or two about Korea can easily see that pretty much 99% of the whole population is Korean. It's like saying Marines should pilot the Air Force's fighter jets lol.
"maybe because most of the black people in Korea are in the military"
Huh...last time I heard, mixed people in Korea couldn't serve. Even if they did, they'd likely to be hazed even worse than Shitteuk or Kangin.

I'm kinda glad that there aren't as many foreigners or people of different ethnicities in kpop. I mean, you don't introduce rules of engagement to a kid playing with toy soldiers.
Let the Asians sort out their identity issues. I'll just be sitting here and waiting for the idol-bubble to burst.

The amount of seriousness in this article is disturbing.
ReplyDeleteUmmm...there aren't even that many black people into kpop. Like, i kinda get where both AKFP and this black girl are coming from but I don't think it's that serious. Black people in America have alot more to worry about then being featured in kpop MV's...the smart ones know this and dgaf cause they aren't killing brain cells listening to this generic, flooded version of pop music (and I say this as a hardcore KARA stan).
ReplyDeleteAlso, why dickride on some cheesy kpop stars who aint doing nothing but stealing steez anyway? idgi. Like who cares if there is a black girl in Big Bangs video instead of that same ol' white girl that in every male kpop video.
At the end of the day, kpop will fade and die and future blacks will probably be embarrassed when they see their ancestors were in a TTS MV. I know I would be.
Save it for white people no need to be treated like a novelty item
DeleteUh ... from where I'm situated, there are a ton of black people into K-pop.
Deleteby "ton" do you mean the, at most, 100 users on Allkpop who made two accounts so they can rage about shit like this???
DeleteSeriously though, while there are some blacks into kpop it's far from "a ton" and closer to a handful. Alot of the foreign fans are SE Asian immigrants or American born SE Asians, NE Asian immigrants or American born NE Asians and Whites. There is also a sizable number of Hispanic fans. This is where I agree with Antikpopfangirl. It would be over-representation. There is a much larger number of "fair-skinned/light-skinned" people listening to kpop compared to those with "tanned/dark skin" so of course they are going to target that audience. That's where the large chunk of the money is. The only exception is the SE Asians (who tend to have darker skin but act like they're walking around with Jiyoung's complexion) cause they eat up anything kpop throws at them no matter how hard their oppars secretly diss on them/rip them off with tacky ass fan merch.
I honestly don't think this problem is anything to stress over or maker big, I'm certain the kpop era will be over pretty soon in terms of "global reach"...people in other places have more important things to concern themselves with (I hope) and they won't even care about this or that girl in a BB video, especially since most people currently and more than likely in the future, don't/will have no idea who that is.
TBH I find ANY foreigners in kpop MV's stupid. Korea is a homogeneous country. It's not like the the Americas, or Western Europe, Some parts of Eastern Europe and Africa. It's all Korean's, all the time, so having that same big nosed and obviously 100% white chick walk around in the MV's...idk i always thought it looked stupid. Like, where did she come from? and of all the guys in Korea, she's checking for you? Umm...OK.
Anyways, honestly speaking, and I hope I don't offend anyone, something that has always intrigued me was SE Asians talking about this kpop idol or another being "dark-skinned" when they are from like Vietnam or The Philippines or something like that and are often times wayy darker than said kpop idol. I seriously don't get that. I'm pretty sure that the "dark-skinned" EXO member is still a good 3/4 shades lighter than you and yet you keep talking about "he's a bit dark" compared to the others or going on about "why is he so dark?"...seriously, SMH at that.
Are you talking about the same white chick from BB Beautiful Hangover? Yeah her nose is really weird like a pig or someshit. Dafuq is she. In kpop videos where they include foreigners, they are usually white and really ugly, like they picked up a tourist from the streets.
DeleteAnd I think the one reason why they use white ppl is because they think all americans are white, and they are try appeal to america. A lot of non western ppl tend to think so, and i come from a country where ppl think all americans are blond and blue eyes and look like movie stars, or are a bunch of fatties.
And about the dark skin, a lot of idols have realy pale skin from all that bleaching and idols like sistar Yoobin, Yuri, Taeyang have dark skin in comparision.
@orangedoodle: What you said all day!
DeleteYou guys are funny
ReplyDeleteI know its kinda irrelavent but some how this shit reminds me of 6th grade when my bitch ass teacher picked some random white bitch to play Mulan...now im fucken annoyed for no reason.
ReplyDeleteI have a friend named Vanessa who is half-black and half-korean and she was a very huge fan of k-pop, especially Bigbang. But when GD&TOP debuted and evntually released 'High High', she was upset that the whole video had more whites than any other race (even though we thought be saw an african-american in it). I explained to her that, while there were a very uncomfortable amount of caucasians present, they were only trying to reach out to international fans.
ReplyDeleteThen she made a point of saying that it looked like they were only trying to appeal to Asians (mainly Koreans) and Americans (mainly Whites).
We let the subject settle there for a while.
Then one day we were googling variety shows to watch and in three of them, there were actors using blackface. One of them included the SNL Korea Dreamgirl skit. We both looked further into the subject and found that racism HAS become a growing and prominent problem in Korean entertianment. It was then that Vanessa grew so ashamed of her Korean roots, she tried to abandon the race completly. She thought that because she was Korean, people would assume she hated people with dark skin, which wasn't at all true! But it was a common belief for Asians where I live.
I know some people who are terrified to even step FOOT in Asia because they fear they are going to be discriminated because they aren't white or asian. They assume that if you're not one of the two, you don't deserve respect in Korea. Where did they learn this? K-pop/Korean Shows.
I think once the Korean entertainment industry, no S.Korea altogether, makes it clear they do accept people from all races, maybe we wonKt be stereotyped as 'pale skin chasers' or 'dark skin shunners'.
PS:
I know that when Koreans use blackface or speak poorly of another race, they may not realize that they are being insensitive. I really think that from a young age all children should be taught that everyone is equal, no matter the race, gender, or disablity.
Sorry! I mean won't instead of wonKt. New phone, still gotta get used to it.
DeleteAbout the whole teaching kids young things...remeber babysitting these kids i when i was young. One of them said they hated chinese people, and the other said they hated black people because they dance and are angry all the time and they say, "you got served."Lol
Delete@Kwon Kwon: It wasn't your imagination. http://i.minus.com/ib00DrTtGM30Km.gif
Deleteinb4 YG are kiggers
SK is inherently racist because they don't know anything else. They haven't seen many black people or white people, so they assume they are either what their parents tell them they are, or what they hear on the news or internet (usually stereotypes).
ReplyDeleteThe dynamics of their society is different from ours. I live in Australia, we've gone through countless races coming into the country and changing the dynamics of our society. New races over the history have come and stayed in the country, and it's not as much of a big deal as it used to be.
But do you know why Australia is so multicultural? 1. Gold Rush, asians and europeans coming over here to get their fortune. 2. Refugees, we took in refugees, whether illegal or legal.
I assume it's the same for America, our societies are built off of people of different races and cultures trying to get money or a safe place to live, and that's why the country is forced to tolerate and in time accept people of that culture. However, in Australia, you really will only be accepted in the major cities, and even then i mean Melbourne and Sydney. Just like how in America, i am assuming, their are places with very little cultural diversity and some places where it's like a fucking rainbow of people.
What does all this shit have to do with the OP?
Well, SK hasn't had different races and cultures come into the country to stay for good. That's why they don't like anything different. Because they haven't seen anything different. Usually a person needs to be forced to have prolonged exposure to something or someone to break down it's or their stereotypes, SK hasn't had that. So we can't really blame SK for being as racist as it is.
The closest they have to anything is Tasha being black, and even then she has some racist haters.
And this isn't restricted to blacks either, or even just SK. Every asian country has it's own case, with varying degrees, or xenophobia. I know my Chinese grandmother said never to trust mainland chinese, they lie and cheat. Never trust Japanese either, they have done things to our family that can never be forgiven. Muslim women are silly wearing those things on their head. Vietnamese people will steal from you. Filipinos will kidnap you and sell you for ransom. Koreans are evil etc.
DeleteMalaysian step mother "Singaporeans are bad people don't talk to them", "Ugh, i had so many Korean girls in my highschool, they're annoying and stupid".
I have only met one reasonable asian person who isn't from my generation and that was my Japanese teacher who said "Yes, their is such hatred and anger between races everywhere. Hopefully, the youth of Japan, Korea and China will be taught to recognise the evil that was committed but to not hate over it."
What was that? Something reasonable from an old asian person? No, never, really?

DeleteI will just like to say best believe I will be strutting fresh off that plane at Incheon Airport with my fabulous deep Hispanic ass tan and curly ass Annie-looking hair and will be the city whore and those ignorant Koreans can't do nothing 'cause ain't nobody holdin' me back. #YOLO
ReplyDelete@AntiKpopFangirl, uh no don't generalize, heffer, that's the problem I have with some people they just have to group everyone together, say some next time, ok? We do not want black girls to be the main focus, STOP PUTTING WORDS IN OUR MOUTHS, GODDAMN IT. We just want them there. And for every black person in a music video there are 3 more white girls in another kpop music video.
ReplyDeleteNow that FAN who happens to be black, WAS indeed a semi idiot, but I understand her. Being Light skin in the Asian world came before they encountered whites that is true. But all the double eyelids, small nose comes from them wanting to look western(aka white) ok, so please don't play dumb.
Black kpop fans like myself want to see black girls in the video because we ONLY want to know our ideal types like us, period. With seeing only foreign girls who aren't black, in the video makes some(majority not) feel bad about ourselves, I though don't feel like this. Even though it would be nice to see black girls in a big bang video I don't mind it, I still love them, but it's OBVIOUS they are tad bit white washed just a tad.
Anyway, I like your blog and your posts usually, but this post was extremely inaccurate and your comments on this post were even worse.
Well I personally always felt that when foreigners are in MVs/PVs, it's really to appeal more to the domestic fans in my opinion. Kinda like a high-end accessory to have. But yeah, in general, black people complaining about there needing to be more blacks in MVs well it would have to apply to every other non-Whites too. I mean, yeah kinda messed up to try to imitate hip-hop/R&B in fashion, style, etc but when you use foreigners it's default white. But I would say why not just have a variety of people if they're aiming for a mufti-cultural/filming in a different country that's mulch-cultural theme? (esp if that's the purpose) Sistar & Big Bang really failed with their latest videos. (it was like, what's the purpose of filming there then....?)
ReplyDeleteAgain, and I repeat not all black girls feel bad about seeing only non black girls but some again majority do not. Majority of us including are like if there is a white girl(aka foreign) why don't they include all foreign girls(black, hispanic etc etc).
ReplyDeleteAlso ANTIKPOPFANGIRL. Bitch, you obviously have zero black friends. You need to talk to me to understand some things, girly.
Now, I disagree with that person who said SK is racist, bitch don't talk about one of my fav countries. But yeah I think Korea some are ignorant. Being racist and ignorant can be a and/or thing. And South Koreans are ignorant. They don't have a problem with blacks but are just ignorant towards us. They believe the media(which tell us black is bad, white is good) that is their problem also them not being around us doesn't help either. They aren't around whites either but they watch the movies, shows, media and they already think white is good so...
ReplyDeleteWoah, woah. You serious? A lot of East Asian countries are racist towards black people. It may not be exactly how the US percieved and treated blacks and non-whites back in the 40's, but they still are due to ignorance and little to no exposure to actual blacks as they are a homogenous country, just like other asian countries.
Delete@Bark Alien Bark you sound so delusional. I'm black and I have been to Korea and Koreans definitely do not like black people. Maybe it is because of lack of exposure, maybe it is because our skin is dark. But generally black people, all foreigners actually, but mainly foreigners with dark skin are not favorable amongst Koreans. Its nothing like Jim Crow, KKK racism but they don't like us. Except it.
Delete@mybiasisyourbias. I kind of agree semi. Asian Americans complain about Hollywood yet look at Daniel Henney's(my future husbands) new movie forgot what the fuck it's called(it's a movie made by an Asian American) but it's an all white and Asian film, I mean what the fuck? How are you going to complain(and Asian Americans complain the most out of all races about Hollywood) and then be discriminative against people of color and only have white? There's another movie with my other husband Terence Yin and he's in an American movie and again it's only a White American and Asian American cast, I mean what the fuck?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, last time commenting... I hope. But I think we the blacks and Asians should reunite. We are all minorities we both are discriminated against. Instead of looking at the difference we should look at the similarities we have. Anyway, I'm done, now I'm going to drink myself to sleep.
ReplyDeleteYeah I'm gonna feed this article more. Just have a few things to add:
ReplyDelete1. In China (and i think SK) it's cool to be white. Asians often try to be like white people, and therefore it's simply cooler to have white people in an MV. It's not about representing other races (wtf, it's SM we're talking about) or expanding the market. It's to add an exotic touch to korean MVs, since koreans are tired of seeing Koreans. It's not about equality or diversity, it's about profit. So stop trying to bring that into it.
2. Why should you ever be represented by your race? I'm half chinese half swedish living in sweden and I don't give a fuck about chinese people appearing on swedish TV. I don't feel the need to represent my race, or be represented by it, I don't give a fuck. When someone calls chinese people nerdy, I don't really care. I'm an individual, individual from other chinese people and I feel no need at all to associate with them. I'm just Lumpor.
That's nice for you lumpor but the rest of us of darker skin was force to knowledge our race. Even before we understood what it was. I was five years old when a white lady behave nasty towards me because of my race.
DeleteIf I didn't have my pride in my culture I wouldn't be here today. That IS the ugly truth of racism. But you comment doesn't reflect on the issue.
awwwhhh... so sad.. here's some validation..
DeleteWow. I never really comment on this site, but I have to say that the article itself is pretty good to me and these comments are hysterical.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, yeah, sure k-pop fans want their nationality involved in their favorite MV's, but that's not really going to happen. South Korea IS filled with generally Koreans and if they actually did want a specific race for a MV, that means putting out ads for them, to which, I don't think they'd hire too many either way. I'm Puerto Rican, but I'm not demanding B.A.P to throw in some Latino dancers into their videos.
Everyone wants diversity in everything. Sure we have population diversity in America, but yet, it's still not across the board with the media. How many Asians do you see in hip-hop/rap or any US music video in general? Unless its an Asian dancer/stripper, um, just about none, maybe one or two as extras, otherwise, the artist themselves is the only Asian. (Or you pull a Gwen Stefani and whore out 'Harajuku' until it becomes a dried up raisin.) Every country's media is screwed up with diversity and race thing.
Okay, it'd be cool to see a few black guys in the background, but if that's your main focus in a music video, you have your k-pop priorities all sorts of fucked up. I'm listening to the music, what the hell are you doing?
My only input for other races in K-pop vids is when they shoot videos in America. USE YOUR FAN BASE, PEOPLE! Don't pull a B2ST and hire a fuck ton of randoms when you can call out your fans. You'll get Asian fans, white fans, black fans, maybe some Spanish fans, shockingly enough maybe one Native American. Who knows?! When K-pop groups shoot vids in America, that's when they can use diversity to their advantage.
But if the groups aren't shooting videos in the US, expect Koreans. Koreans everywhere. Live with it. That's what you signed up for when you chose to listen to k-pop. Done.
Amen to that!!
Deletejust tired of non-korean kpop fans in general who wish their races were represented in kpop. kpop is still korean pop. the only races they would accept are probably chinese japanese or other eastern asians.
ReplyDeleteI think it's interesting that it's no problem for this site to generalize fangirls, bash them, and even generalize other ethncities but as soon as it's black people "Oh no! What a way to stereotype!!!! We're all not like that!!!" Just as much not every Kpop fan are as idiotic many of us like to think they are. If we're gonna use that logic, we shouldn't be stereotyping any group of people here (groups can be anyone/thing.. not just race) I dunno some are getting a bit Issac Hayes-y... No problem bashing everything else until it apples to you in some way.
ReplyDeleteThis is the original post:
Deletehttp://kpopsecrets.tumblr.com/post/29522809236/please-read actually it was quite good and hit on certain points about the lack of diversity in kpop. But I think people were so annoyed is that some black female fans are fearless to post their disgruntle attitudes. Question the image of beauty when it comes to foreign women. as well question the fear of the foreigner in a homogenous society.
Anti kpop fangirl isn't the site that can really tackle this issue without being bias to their own ignorance. These subjects make any fan defensive for different reasons.
There is one thing I'm curious about. What about those idols male or female who do wanna so a more diverse group of peoples in their mvs? Every shade of brown that has to offer beside the shades of white. Its a know fact if an idol shows a black women/man or darker/tan asian women/man there will be backlash form fans. idols will burn both ends of the candle stick if they stray to far from korea's obsession to only show white skin.
I personally watch vids from black females who live there as will black female fans who seem more level headed.

I don't know any asian blog or asian pop site that is run by asians who can tackle this issue very well.
Kpop fans isn't a race its something you chose to be apart of, being black isn't and I would say that out of all black kpop fans this issue is about 50/50 split. Some people have a problem and others don't. Secondly, I don't remember us bashing ethnicities on here but okay. What I don't like about this post is all the assumptions that were made, a lot of things anti-kpop fangirl is saying is not what many of us are implying at all.
Deletewhite ppl, poptarts, oreos, twinkies, crackers, spics, honkeys, chinks, cooleys etc et al
ReplyDeletestop saying "nigga" that's that shit we don't like.
anti - your ignorance is showing
repost of my response to her:
I don't think you should expect to see any color changes, mind you it is KOREAN pop music and the majority of the population is KOREAN. At best I think it would be better for idols/artists to know a little about the history and culture of the type of music they are portraying (anyone see G Dragons new video snippet? cringe worthy) and respect it. I think it's crazy to expect to see a full out Black person fronting or in a South Korean pop group. South Korea isn't the United States and therefore you can't superimpose your thoughts of what would happen here onto them. They didn't go through civil rights like we did here... there aren't that many Black people to begin with. If anything given the history they have with Japan. I think it's HUGE that they have an idol group with Japanese members (Cross Gene).
If you love the music... love it! Did you know that there are many people of color who work behind the scenes to help create the music and choreography for the videos? Trust that there is a representation in the music world of people of color in South Korea, but you're not going to see it because it's behind the scenes.

ReplyDeleteI am a black kpop fan and the few(emphasis of few) black kpop who complain do no represent all of us. The average black fan like myself could care less about blacks being represented in a freaking kpop music video. I listen to kpop because I enjoy some of the music not because I need to be validated by oppa. I don't have a problem with mainly caucasions in kpop videos because obviously Korean find them more acceptable, attractive, paler, whatever and that is totally their prerogative. I am secure with myself so it doesn't affect me in the least. However I will take issues when blacks are openly mistreated, i.e. blackface. Because it is just not right. Please understand that most black fans could care less about this subject. Its always those few loud mouths that tarnish the whole group
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteDude, stop fucking overgeneralizing. "Black kpop fans always want x, that want y". No, I just want to listen to the artists that I enjoy listening to. I couldn't give two squirts of piss if their MVs were filled with just pillows, tbh.
ReplyDeleteThe part about the having foreigner in kpop is what I agree with and I'm black. But, in most caese, Korean artists do put a lot of white people in their videos.
ReplyDeleteTwo examples I remember are: GDTOP-Knock out and Bigbang- bad boy (i think they only used one or two asian girls, the rest were white)
So, when other races besides white or asian see that, they want to be included as well. I for one am okay with not seeing black people in kpop, but as the number of white people in videos rise, it makes me feel bad that kpop is mostly based off of black music, but only whites are being represented.
to be honset, there shouldn't be any foreigners in kpop, but we're seeing it. Why is it a problem with you when it comes to black people?
Whites areen't complaining because most of them belive in the stereotype that asians love whites. Blacks, being almost the most hated race on Earth, don't want to be seen that way (or atleast the majority don't. I'm apart of that majority). So when we see our favorite kpop stars with black people, it gives us some sort of releif that they don't think the way that Jenny Hyun thinks (have you heard of her?).
So, yeah, just my little fill. I don't exactly know where i went with this....
I haven't read everything here, so sorry if I repeated something already mentioned.
ReplyDeleteAs a black female kpop fan, I don't want to see any black people in kpop. I just liking seeing Asians in kpop. Rain was my introduction to kpop back in 2006, and even though I knew Usher influenced him, I didn't expect to see a bunch of black people in his music videos. As far as white women in kpop videos goes, I don't think black women want to be objectified anymore than they already are. The American hip-hop videos are horribly sexist and degrading enough.
Bitch you trying to excuse black face and anti blackness LOL. Asian Americans are racist as fuck. This article is an uninformed, culturally insensitive, prejudices mess.
