Oh My Girl - Closer + Cupid

Since I've seen a lot of people mention Oh My Girl in the comments here and One Hallyu, I figured that it was time that I finally check them out.

Oh My Girl debuted back in April, back when I was MIA, so I knew nothing about them. From all of the talk about the group, I thought this may have been an attempt from nugu supporters to push OMG like they did with GFriend. However, OMG is a group that people should be on the lookout for as well.

OMG doesn't rival Twice in terms of looks, but there aren't any Hyoyeons/Mins/Jias/Boms in this group. Unlike Twice, there's only one underage member as opposed to three; however, the youngest member's birthday in OMG is around the same day as Tzuyu's birthday, so both groups will become fully legal at the same time anyway.

Cupid is a safe debut track, as it is catchy and worth a few listens, but OMG's potential to be a good group rests with having more quality tracks like Closer. Out of all the title tracks I've heard from female rookie groups this year, Closer is above and beyond anything else a rookie girl group has released so far this year. Unfortunately, the song has an unnecessary rap inserted, but it shouldn't distract from how good the rest of the song is.

Oh My Girl has the most promise from a rookie girl group since BESTie debuted, so I'll be on the lookout for future OMG songs unless they decide to release three average tracks from Duble Sidekick in a row.

  1. [Note a hater disclaimer] Err... but 1 of their lead visual can sometime remind you of Hyorin though if you watched their reality show... Lol

  2. I love this group! Bought both albums and like them both too. Closer reminds me of jpop Flower's songs, and would be perfect without the rap. That said the rap doesnt ruin anything either.

  3. The rap in Closer didn't bother me at all, what I didn't like about it were the hideous vocal improvs. Great song apart from that.

    1. agree, the rap section wasn't such a tryhard part as compared to other songs

    2. I didn't notice any improvs; I thought it was all pre planned. Anyway, as long as no one tries to kill my eardrums Ailee-style...

    3. Technically "improvs" is the wrong word but the vocal soloing that happens in the last third of the song just shits all over the beautiful ambience that the song has built up until that point.

    Let's.... agree to disagree.

    2. I dunno, Twice has some of the highest average hottness/10 scores of any girl group (hotness of each member/number of members). The only groups who I think have a clear cut higher H/10 average would be KARA/T-ARA/After School.

    3. I wouldn't call anyone in OMG hot, but their visuals are up there when you look at all the rookie gg that debuted this year.

    4. Twice is a group where the pretty members like Nayeon and Momo take attention away from the ug members like Jungyeon and Chaeyoung (who both look like men).
Tbh Nine Muses 2013 lineup was really the benchmark for a gg where all the members are hot

    5. OMG look more natural and fresher. They're going for that young girl look. I dunno what twice wants to be, maybe another t-ara.

    6. They are competing with Lovelyz/Gfriend/April in the young girl look. I have trouble distinguishing all the girls from the 4 groups apart, the only one with non-bland looks (who isn't one of the fuglies) is the OMG main girl and that's because her face looks like a shoujo manga character with huge eyes and that ridiculously triangular face

  5. Cupid and Closer are some of my favorite songs of the year.

  6. Most of the more well known female rookies are so bland looking. I could go outside my house right now, walk down the street and immediately find a girl more interesting looking than all of the members of Lovelyz, Gfriend and OMG combined.

    1. I think it's time for you to introduce your own rookie girl group to the kpop market.
