[MV Review] SPICA - Russian Roulette

Lee Hyori's new girl group SPICA makes their official debut with Russian Roulette. Will it make you say U Go Girl? Full review after the jump.

First of all, this is a rare MV that is exactly what is promised. Russian Roulette is a "storyline" (and I use this term very loosely) MV about the SPICA group members playing, you guessed it, Russian Roulette with each other.

Oh dis gon be gud.

 As you all know there can only be one loser, so the storyline is just them playing until they reach the inevitable conclusion. I will give them props for having rather believable reactions and expressions. To be honest, I fully expect a very hammy performance from the lot of them, but there was enough gravitas and emotion put into the acting to be quite enjoyable. Especially since a lot of the MV consists of closeups and shots of their eyes alone.

The rest of the non-storyline parts are your typical KPop closeups sprinkled in with snippets of the dance.
From what we get to see from the MV alone, it doesn't seem like SPICA will be a performance-heavy group. The dance is rather basic and droll, but for a group of their vocal power, that's just fine. Brown Eyed Girls can't dance for shit, but they sure as hell can sing and that works for them. I don't see why not for SPICA as well. Highlights of the dance include the fap dance that seems to be working its way into EVERY GODDAMN GIRL GROUP DANCE LATELY THOUGH.

And if that isn't your thing there's always this one.

Their hair and makeup are decent. None of them look utterly fug, only a tad on the homely side at worst. Rather odd outfits of the sort you'd see on F(x) or something though. I will lay claim on the blonde one though, so back off.

Mine.

The song itself is great. A mid-tempo piece atypical of your standard KPop electrodance fare, this is the song to get you into this group, especially if their first offering wasn't your thing. I particularly enjoyed the soaring chorus, but the rapping bits were definitely not necessary in this song. Nothing mindbreakingly terrible but it is a bit out of place regardless. As I hinted at earlier, all 5 of them can actually sing worth a damn and there aren't any obvious Dara types in this group. But we'll let the lives be the final judge of that.

One thing that pleasantly surprised me though was how the redheaded dyke-ish one wasn't the rapper of the group. Usually that kind of image is reserved for the "what the fuck are we going to do with you" person of the crew (Sup Amber), but she's probably the best vocalist in SPICA. Whadda know.

TL;DR:
Great debut song from vocally talented rookies, rap (like it is most of the time) threw off the song a bit. MV was nothing special, but you get to see cute girls play Russian roulette.

I give this song 4.5 swags out of 5.
