GOT7 want to be known as "Black Kids"

I don't really care about GOT7 - a JYP rookie group - but this is stupid it's incredibly funny. I think my IQ dropped about 10 points when I read that before I started laughing at the laptop screen. This isn't remotely racist* or anything, but couldn't they just refer to their music as "hip-hop"? Their PR management must have been face-palming themselves so hard after hearing this lol.

*because of their stupidity people are going to use this against them to refer to them as "racist" rather than just plain dumb.

  1. I smell a controversy on a racist comment coming. Added with some incredible overreactions from netizens of course.

  2. I've already seen the netizen reactions, but I had no idea nor interest in what they said. I was hoping for something a bit more... shocking.

  3. Classic case of controversial slang. (black=hip hop/rap/rnb music)
"black music" is the korean version of "thats gay" to americans. it will ultimately be up to the individual if they find it offensive or not.
    1) some will believe they innocently associate those words without also stereotyping that group of people.
    2) others will believe using the word itself is already offensive.
but in the end both sides will continue to be divided while the use of the slang/word will continue

Do you live in South Korea? Do you have any personal experience to support this statement?
Not a polemic, I'm just asking.

    2. Irrelevant because the member who said it (Jackson) is a Hong Kong native and is proficient in English. He also said he wanted the group to called "black freedom".

    3. i was using the im gay slang as an example but only talking about korean entertainment not its society (but if its in entertainment it might be used around in korea too who knows). but there's alot of instances where kpop uses the word black when referencing with things related to hip hop.

    1. Zaku said he was going to review the MV and even made a draft of it, but he has a 20% success rate of ever doing the MV reviews he makes drafts for lol. I'll probably review it in February.

  5. I am not surprise. JYP himself has always referred to hip hop as black music in all of the Kpop Star seasons.

  7. It is a well known idol rite of passage that all groups that are "hip-hop influenced" must use the N-word at least once on a pre-debut track, refer to hip hop/R&B as "black music" or say they want to be re-incarnated as a black man. Check every single one of them from Big Bang right down (wayyyy down) to Topp Dogg and Got7. They have all earned their stripes.

    1. No one is trying anything.
They like hip-hop and the culture surrounding it.
      So get over it, please.
People with dark skin do not OWN hip-hop!
Its world wide and international music that anyone can listen to, no matter what race they are or where they come from.

  11. The only shitstorm will be coming from overseas because this happens a lot in kpop. Asians in general (I'm Chinese btw) aren't very politically correct in many ways that westerners are. It doesn't mean we regard black people (oh wait, was I supposed to say African American? >__>) with anything but good feeling, it's just a different culture. People need to understand that if some Asian kid Googles 'hip hop', no one can deny that the greater part of the results will feature African Americans. Have you all forgotten how recently it was that white rappers used to be a laughing stock?

Is there something wrong with people who have dark skin?
You need to gain manners and lose the ignorance.
You're rude as fuck, and need to honestly shut the hell up.
This isn't an opinion, it's you just being an asshole on purpose because you like the attention and drama. Do you want to be Miley Cyrus that bad? Thirsty for people to read your bullshit and think it's funny? Go get some water, and hush.

  15. R&B, Hip-Hop, most County,Rock and Pop are all technically Black Music...didn't Little Richard say R&B stood for "Real Black" in the underground be-bop scene. Most of the songs singers like Elvis sang were classified as R&B but with a white face were labeled Pop or Rock...people need to read up on Music HIstory.

  17. People need to pull out a freaking dictionary and learn how to distinguish between the words "racist", "prejudice", a and just plain "ignorant". These comments are not RACIST but rather IGNORANT. I'm black and I don't take offense to this AT ALL. People here in AMERICA, we label EVERYTHING!! I hear black and Hispanic people call pop and rock music, "white people music" all the time and vice versa. Idols in S. Korea do not have anyone to teach them what's right and wrong when it comes to things like this. It actually pisses me off when I read comments about how wrong or "racist" a kpop idol for making a minor MISTAKE like this when we all know that while living in America, we see (or might even encounter) things way worst and that are genuinely RACIST. Leave the boys alone please, I would like to see them get far.
