[MV Review] Orange Caramel "Catallena"

Orange Caramel's back. Eat it up, everyone.

May I suggest you pass on the soy sauce, though?

After School subgroup Orange Caramel has returned once again to satiate fans of quirky dance music. Those who love the group's established sound have reason to be thankful, as "Catallena" treads familiar ground with an energetic, disco beat paired with jpop-style vocals. Unfortunately, those who haven't liked Orange Caramel up to this point probably won't find reason to convert to the Sweet Side (It's like the Dark Side but with less evil plotting and brighter uniforms).

Being a big fan of Orange Caramel's music, I enjoyed "Catallena" a lot. It's not a new sound for the group or anything, but it's enjoyable and different enough not to feel been-there-done-that.

The song describes feeling bewitched by a gorgeous, charming woman who you want to be around but of whom you nonetheless are jealous. Basically, she's the popular girl in school that you stare at in class, talk shit about behind her back with your loser friends, but would still wet yourself a little if she invited you to hang out at her place. We've all been there before (I know I have, at least).

This situation plays out in the video as the girls, as supermarket fish, discover they're considered not as valuable as a nearby octopus, played by comedian Kim Daesung.

Nobody puts Nana on the clearance shelf.

The girls constantly compare themselves to the more expensive octopus, despite being seemingly beautiful mermaids (or shrimp, salmon and mackerel. It's a little confusing).

Under O.C., under O.C. Darling it's better, down where it's wetter. Take it from me.

In the end, the message of the video is basically not to compare yourself to someone else. Just because someone values one person's qualities over your own, doesn't mean you don't have value. Different people have different tastes. Some people like to eat the octopussy, while others would rather eat Raina. Like Kpopalypse.

BOTTOM LINE: Orange Caramel comes back with more of their quirky, jpop-inspired sound. Fans will probably find it tasty; people who hate the group's shtick will most likely gag on "Catallena" like so much cheap sushi.

    1. No joke, it originally said "Different people have different tastes. Some people like to eat the octopussy, while others would rather eat Raina. Like Kpopalypse."

But I decided against it at the last moment.

    6. Organised religion is all about telling people to be happy with their lot in their current life by telling them they'll be rewarded after they die. If I reward Fany Pack in this life, I'm breaking the rules.

    7. Does this GIF support your religion too?

    15. You girls and your gay parade of joy... this isn't a place for happiness ! :fist:
Did you forget ? Everybody going to AKF is a pervert male that just wants to bang idols !

    16. I actually lol-ed at "gay parade of joy." Hugs, rainbows, and butterflies, No!

    17. I'd go for the hugs! But not the rainbows and butterflies. Ugh no.

(I'm assuming No meant gay in the slightly archaic sense. O tempora! O mores! What have modern times come to when people refer to the original definition of gay as archaic? *le sigh*)

    18. @chaesicat; ok, that post was really gay.

@No: gay as in happy? because that post was bemoaning the deterioration of the English language.

  2. being an indian citizen and therefore knowing some punjabi,i was highly intrigued by the use of punjabi words in the song and when i checked the video description in the pledis channel,it turned out to be a sample from a old pakistani folk song......
also lizzy is ruining my bias list big time..............

    1. Should we riot like we did for CL??

    2. Probably not. Pledis has already explained itself in the vid description, and it's not like anything actually blew up. It's basically the same situation as Selena Gomez's "Come and Get It" (though Catallena is by far a better song XD)

  11. Can anybody read what the cook is looking at at 01:09 in the TV ?

  12. Orange Caramel has been one of my top girl groups ever since I got into Kpop, but I'll never understand the fangirls (look at the comments) who praise them for being cute and weird as opposed to doing a sexy concept. Every concept they've ever done was sexy, albeit quite fetishy. I don't see why they have to justify liking their songs and quirky concepts by implying that girl groups who are overtly sexy are inferior.

This group stays consistent in their sound, and I'm loving it.

    1. Eh you surely know how fangirls think, sexy guys are ok but sexy girls are abomination.

Can't agree more on the fetishy part

    2. They're like the guilty pleasure you don't have to be guilty about.

  13. Nana's got legs for days and dat Halibutt tho! *hhnnnnggg* *nigel thornberry noises*

  14. I loved the song and music video! If there is one thing Orange Caramel isn't, it's boring. But I still don't like sushi.

  15. Orange Caramel nails it every time.

One of the best girl groups ever.

  16. The MV was hilarious, they keep making them weird-ass funny.
Song was nice too, was definitely something a fan would like.

Also Raina! Raina! Raina! Raina looks great in the MV, huzzah.
Anyone else think Nana managed to look like Yoona and Suzy in the MV here and there?

    1. The mermaid nana in the gold frame actually doesn't look like nana.

Oh and I don't think many ppl here likes suzy and yoona, they're beautiful but also bland.

      Delete
    2. Well, there's just one moment where her, particularly her eyes make her look like Suzy but that's mermaid Nana as you say, I think.

Yoona is kinda bland looking, pretty but nothing special, although I will disagree about Suzy.
Seriously though, first time I see Nana not looking like Nana.

  17. After watching the MV, I totally want to eat them..... out.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I like it even though Nana looks so fucking creepy @ 2:00.

A Big LOL to all those idiot fangirls praising Orange Caramel for not doing a "sexy" comeback. It's probably better that they don't know that OC is 100% fap bait.

Also, anyone see that person in the MV's comment section telling people to repent for their sins? Bet that's directed to everyone who's undoubtedly fapping to this.

  19. oc is like this never ending game of "things that would flop if they were less attractive"

    ReplyDelete
  20. So glad that they're back ^__^ I love this song, the concept and just everything.
This song is awesome just like any other OC song <3

  21. The song isn't as great as Lipstick, but I still like it. thumbs up!

  22. This song is not a huge-ass-shining-diamond like "Lipstick" but still I probably won't stop listening to it 24/7 for a week. Catchy song, really nice use of sampling the Pakistani song, and the concept. LOL. LOVE IT.

I'm starting to wonder whether I should convert into Kpopalypse oppar's religion or not :D
