[MV Review] SNSD - Mr. Mr.

I heard the song when it came out, but I have yet to watch the music video. I've heard it's bad, but I just hope it isn't so bad that I have to write a fanfic describing how bad it is like I had to with IGAB.

........

I feel cheated after watching this music video. Fuck you, SM. You delayed and delayed this music video...for this result? Go suck a walrus dick, you fucking douchebags. This is almost as bad as Obsidian developing South Park: The Stick of Truth for over ten years just for the game to be 10 hours long (and that's the main reason I didn't go out and buy the game today.) We waited all this time for a disjointed, haphazard MV with terrible editing. What makes the experience worse is that this should have been one of SNSD's best MVs, not just in Korea, but overall. The eight girls and the lone orc warrior look amazing in this music video, but the quality of it is so bad that I thought I was watching it 144p in certain instances. I went to check the video quality and it was in 480p (for some reason, since YT videos never load all the way, it just sucks trying to watch MVs in 1080p, so I stick to 480p just so the fucker will load faster.) I honestly thought I was watching something from the 80s.

It just sucks that I'll never be able to fully enjoy watching this MV, despite how great YoonSic look in the MV. (In fact, like I mentioned earlier, everyone looks good, which is pretty rare. Usually someone like Sunny or Hyoyeon will be trolled or Tiffany will be looking like shit since she has this "I'm shitting all over everyone" and "I'm resembling Park Bom" cycle going on from time to time.)

Watching this MV is like getting a blowjob from Han Ye Seul while licking Shindong's asshole after he had bloody diarrhea. Is it worth torturing yourself just to enjoy something else? That is essentially what everyone has to ask themselves when they watch this MV. "Do I find the members hot enough to watch this MV even though the editing is so bad that even CCM's music video editors could laugh at the quality of Mr. Mr.'s music video?"

As for the song itself, it sounds like a track that didn't make it onto f(x)'s Pink Tape. After deciding what to do with the song after Pink Tape was released, I'm assuming the conversation was similar to this in SM's council room.

Exec #1: "Well, since we didn't put this on Pink Tape, what should we do with this song?"
Exec #2: "How about we give it to BoA and just use it as an album track?"
Exec #3: "BoA will be busy releasing music in Japan, alongside with filming movies in Korea. We can't sit on this song until 2015."
SNSD's Manager: "How about giving the song to SNSD? I mean, it's way better than The Boys and I Got A Boy."
Exec #1: "That's not a bad idea. A B-side f(x) track is better than just about everything SNSD has released in the past few years in Korea, so we really have nothing to lose."

I like the song, as I've been listening to it over and over while writing this review. It is nothing revolutionary, but after trying to be revolutionary with their past two Korean title tracks and failing miserably, I'll take a safe track that doesn't go anywhere over a song that tries to do too much and fails at everything it intended to do. The instrumental feels pretty static, and I feel a bit let down that there's no bridge, just a forced in dance break to make Hyoyeon's fans happy.

When it comes to singing, I like it because it isn't overly cutesy as it has been in some of their Korean title tracks, and the complete lack of 'rapping' makes it feel like a godsend. The fact that Tiffany doesn't vocally masturbate in this song is simply gold to me, because she's almost as bad as Bom when it comes to "Oh hey you UCAADs, listen to me strain for some notes that I can't comfortably hit."

In the end, it's a really safe track for SNSD, but one they really needed after two disasters. It's just a shame that the shitty music video ruins everything, considering how good the members look. It's like trying to enjoy a censored Japanese porno: only the most dedicated and hardcore will be able to enjoy the experience, but the majority of us will give up part way. Hopefully SM rectifies this by releasing a new music video, but I'm not counting on it.

  1. Now I feel like a horrible person, because I actually think this is SNSD's best music video.

    1. In terms of how great the members look, yeah. But I honestly checked to see if the video was in 144p a couple of times before I realized it was just stupid effects thrown in.

    2. Those outfits at about 3:40 are amazing and probably the best styling they've ever had, pity it's all in Pacman resolution.

    3. I certainly agree that the editing was rather weird. Maybe its true what SM said about losing data. But I love the concept, the outfits, the filming style, the effects, but more than anything, I love this http://najungs.tumblr.com/post/78123436691

    4. I actually liked this video as well, besides "The Room" quality footage.

Better than anything 2NE1 has done in years.

  3. First off, Simon and Martina freaking compared this song to Chocolate Love, like wut. This song is nothing near the good stuff they do before The Boys.

As for my opinion, the song is so underwhelming, of course everything sounds good after IGAB, but if this were to be released after something like Gee, it would be undoubtedly a fucking shit. Seriously, nothing is interesting in this song.

As for the video, this isn't CCM-seizure video bad, but it's still pretty horrendous. I mean are the static effects and over the top lens flares really needed? It's 2014, why would you want to make your video look like it's made in 1990? The same shit applies for all those instagram filters. One thing I really like about the comeback is the suited uniform, it looks really good on them.

Are you going to review T-ara's First Love akf? And where's review-god Zaku?

    1. You have a link to First Love? I had no idea about its existence.

Zaku is busy with school, as he's taking classes before applying to optometry school. He still has a Spica review that he's working on that may get finished in July.

    8. 1990s? I reckon SM were going for a grindhouse b-movie/horror concept. These films are deliberately made with small budgets and in low quality, the reason why we are treated to the crapload of filters thrown on top of high production. Unfortunately, to get the 70s feel, high def footage is stylistically muddied which doesn't make sense.
Still, UCAADs be tripping if you complain because you can't watch the MV in 720/1080p.

The plot(or lack of) is fitting of such exploitation films. The girls are unhappy(?) with Mr. Mr thus they drug his fruit tart so they can replace his heart with a jewel encrusted one(... for some reason). I'm sure Sunny replaced a 'bone' or two for good measure.
That sense of creepiness and the high contrast of pink and gritty background make up for the horror of a jigsaw job used for scene cuts and sequencing... then again, its actually pretty fitting.

      Outfits were daebak doe!

  4. The MV was shit but I really liked the song. No it wasn't revolutionary but to me that's not what SNSD is about anyway. Mr Mr feels like one their more traditional songs like Genie, RDR etc

  5. I liked the song. I like the MV too, I like the dark vibe but it feels like I've been drugged or some shit when I watch it lol.
All the members looked amazing though.

  8. I found the song to be forgettable. It was passable, I guess, but just generic sounding and not nearly as likeable as their past hits. Plus, I found the MV to be boring. I can usually count on some simple yet decently catchy choreography from an SNSD MV, but there was nothing interesting about the dancing in this one.

    1. I think the goal for SNSD at this point is just to eek by with material that is listenable by the average pop fans tastes and let the immense power of the fan base carry the team to victory. As long as their shit isn't absolute trash like a majority of 2NE1's stuff they'll remain at the top, regardless of how shite their MV's are.

  9. First time commenting here :D

I gotta say I agree wholeheartedly with this review, I fucking hate the MV. After all those baiting and waiting, I feel cheated. I feel like I got a headache or seizures after watching it. At least my bias Hyoyeon (yeah I know, kill me now, can't help it) isn't trolled or styled disastrously again. For the song itself, it isn't that bad, the second half of the song saved the bland first half. But still, it is shit compared to what SNSD released before The Boys and IGAB (even as a sone I'll admit those 2 are disasters).

Just wondering, have you heard the song 'Soul' from their album? It's WAAAAYYY better than 'Mr. Mr.', I feel like SM should've passed the title track and MV torch to this song :(

    4. @ Lacy Supreme & Mark DeFields Wow, with all the people praising 'Mr. Mr.' I'm kinda glad I find people who agreed with me. Haha. High five!

@ Max Step Haha thanks! It's just that I saw a few times in the comment section when people mentioned that they like Hyoyeon, they got attacked by another commenter. Kinda glad that I didn't lolol

    5. It's just a bit of a running joke on here about the way she looks. She definitely used to get screwed over by the stylists but these last 2-3 years its been great seeing her looking as good as the others.

  10. South Park: The Stick of Truth is MUCH longer than 10h. Even if you're one of those stupid ADHD kids that just rush through a game to say it is short. There is a lot of side stuff, places to explore and things to discover, so I'm not sure where you read that.

I think the MV could be much better, if it didn't have as many post-processing effects, because I like some of the styling and prop ideas. It's as if they couldn't decide on what to do and weren't sure if it'd look cool or not, so they constantly cut away from it.
    Song's ok overall.

    4. People hate on PewDiePie just because he is
      1) Way more popular than he (seems to) deserve/s
      2) Its a hipster thing to hate what a average joe likes.
      3) He made repeated rape jokes early last year which ticked off a lot of people.

None the less, he is really funny with an inborn charisma and talent , and i am sure he doubled the popularity of the South Park game from his video.

as for the SNSD MV, too much FILTERS and UNEVEN SCREEN TIME but the dance break in male dress was HOT

  11. "The eight girls and the lone orc warrior look amazing in this music video"

Dude, you feeling alright? Because that was kind of a compliment lol. But anyway, Hyoyeon and the rest looked really, really good in this.

Personally, I think the song is really good. Not by Genie standards, but pretty good.
The only thing that make up for the MV is the individual shots of the members.

Even though Tiffany made up 75% of the MV, at least everyone else got around the same screen time.

  12. they played it safe with the song since igab was full of shit, the mv sucked so much though. why did they hire that ccm mv maker. he was meant to die homeless and sm hired him, deleted data, remade it to fit his light show fetish..

  14. They looked good except sunny imho, but I was never fond of her face. The second part of the song really did save this song from being craptacular. But eyk really pissed me off with their review, except for that korean chick. Other than the mv sucking, I would like to see the rest of the dance

    1. Sunny is sort of an acquired taste in my books. She looks pretty poor in all of her nurse-ish/hospital concept shots but the group dance portions she is complete sex on sight material. The brief shots up her shirt in some scenes may be the reason for that though xD

  15. Honestly I thought Yoona looked absolutely terrible. Her jawline is so ridiculously v-shaped that she look like a fucking ant-eater.

Taeyeon on the other hand, has become the peak of human perfection in my eyes. The mere concept of Taeyeon existing in the same universe as me is enough to propel me into a state of constant orgasm. If I were to ever see her in the flesh I wouldn't even hesitate to perform a reverse-birth and crawl into her warm crevice to live inside her for the remainder of our lives.

    3. OMG, I finally found someone that shared my view of Yoona in the MV. Usually she's always the prettiest or styled the most pretty, but when I saw her in this MV I was like "WTF happened with her jaw". Plastic surgery gone bad or just bad make-up?

  16. It's generic, it's safe, and it's not very catchy. Of course, my complaining isn't going to stop this song from hitting #1 on the K-pop Billboard and the Gaon. As AKF said a few months back, SNSD could record themselves shitting diarrhea into a cup and it would still be a hit.

  18. Martina said it reminded her of Kpop's "glory days". I don't think Kpop was ever of extremely high quality, and what's even funnier is that this is the song she chose to put on a pedestal. It sounds like a filler track from Britney Spear's latest album, which I unfortunately bought without listening to first.

  19. The part where they were dancing in men's formal clothing, very classy and sexy, totally redeemed the remaining music video..
