[MV Review] BoA - Only One


I have the same problems writing this as I did with the Younha review. Just like the Younha review, I was just gonna write "Awesome" and call it a day. I was just happy that BoA came back with Only One, because it felt like it was her apology for Hurricane Venus. I also just wanted to finish the review before Zaku wrote his review for The Shadow.

 
BoA took the reigns with the track, and it tells because it doesn't sound like an SM title track. I'm still surprised SM still let BoA have this kind of track as the title track, but I'm not complaining. I like it. It does really remind me of Kpop before 2007, before Korea had tried adopting so many trends in an attempt to make Kpop spread. This song seems like the antithesis to the current Kpop. There's a pleasant melody and actual lyrics to a title track. I know, I was trying to hold my "holy fucks" in too.

Of course, the choreography got all of the attention this time around. Her choreography for Hurricane Venus seemed so...weak compared to what she had done in the past. So BoA stepped her shit up this time with an actual choreography, probably the most memorable one in Kpop in years. BoA didn't even need to shake her ass or show off her legs to get attention for her dancing, which is rare these days when choreographies for girl groups are made to get guys to fap.



All in all, apology accepted for Hurricane Venus, BoA.

    Tho the song had no climax, it was still enjoyable.
    I always thought she is the best dancer in sm(although fucking sone, elf, exorcist, cassie, shawols will disagree) imo.
    And i think she's way better than Hyorivagina.

    Pretty fucking bland song. The voice directing was acceptable for once, but the sampled piano loops, and the back-to-back synthetic and acoustic violins were laughable. the extended chorus was way too extended for this kind of song. The song should've been made shorter, leaving more room for impact and less obvious sampling.
    It does sound pre 2007, though. Better than what passes for average in kpop nowadays, but not what passes for average in general.

      The instrumentals are great. BoA's voice is too shallow for this, though. She lacks vocal depth for a complicated melody. No hate on her. She kinda did justice

      They aren't complicated, they're a joke. Multiple instruments in the same key, doing the same notes =/= complicated.

    But on a serious note, although I love the choreography, I still don't like the actual song.
    It's so unbelievably forgettable to me, even though I recognize how much more real/skilled it is than most kpop out there right now.

    Am I the only one who cannot relate the dancing to the song. Looks like she's dancing to some HIP HOP shit...while the song is some gay ass slow jam shit.

    did boa apologise for not trying hard and not meeting our expectations and what not ..cause i think her songs are all good i mean im only starting to be a mega fan of hers but i really like her songs :D its very rare i like all songs from a solo artist
