[MV Review] BLACKPINK - "Playing With Fire"

The second song to be released from their new set, and their best song overall. One of the best of the year to be honest.

Remember the theory that if Teddy and Han Ye Seul broke up then YG songs would get better? Well a few days before this was released they announced to have officially broken up, so either this had been going on for some time or Teddy wrote and produced this song overnight because this song is really fucking good.

Again, I love everything about Lisa's presence in the MV.

This is the upbeat electro-pop song 2NE1 should have released a long time ago. What makes "Playing With Fire" work is that it's not sloppy and trying to be something so hard that it adds in extra bells and whistles which in the end wind up making and worse song, not a better one. The song has one pleasant melody, good usage or rapping and instruments, a really nice pace (not to fast, not to slow) and makes use of a good beat without over-trapping it. The song stands out among other releases, not just with YG but also with releases over the entire year, and this coming from someone who hasn't been disappointed with 2016 releases in a general sense.

Jennie's ridiculously pretty.

Side note - people have been comparing Lisa's rapping to Hyuna's. I honestly don't hear it, if anything she sounds like AOAs Jimin (especially during the "burn baby burn" parts.)

While "Stay" was much more of the softer tumblr aesthetic type of video, "Playing With Fire" dives deeper into a classic ultra HD YG video, which works with this kind of song. It's the kind of imagery you'd expect, lots of fire and lots of water and lots of good shots of the member. Again the girls beauty is no joke here, they all look great. I especially like the fashion choices, and enjoyed the contrast between the sequined glamour outfits they wore in the dance shots in comparison to their more casual wear in the individual portions.

Rose is one of the few idols that can pull that hair color off.

Overall this was great release and I hope Blackpink continues to get handed quality songs like this in the future.

Best styling on Jisoo yet!

  1. I like their songs and their visuals but if they keep this up they're going to end sounding like a 2NE1 tribute group, also I like the fact on how hard is it to choose the favorite girl

    1. They are explicitly aimed at being 2ne1's tribute group

  2. I agree that it's their best song yet, but it still misses something. Or maybe it's because I listened to that new BTS song which sounds a lot like this... I don't know but I'm sure this is not one of their 2NE1-like releases lol.

  3. This is their first song I like, so I looked at the "behind the scenes" MV filming and they were adorable, being stupidly underage as they are. Sigh…

    1. But they are not underage, the youngest one is 19

    2. @Rescue Cat; Never trust a person that actually writes out "sigh". Not even me.

    3. Sorry about the confusion, I wasn't referring to their physical age but rather mental age/behaviour behind the cameras.

  4. The 2NE1 2.0 comments are a bit overboard with these two releases... Boombayah definitely sounded like a knock off, but Stay and Playing With Fire are both musically pretty damn different than 2NE1. The only thing that makes these two releases comparable to 2NE1 are the number of group members, similarity in Lisa's rap phrasing to CL, and the nasal quality to Rose's singing which is a bit reminiscent of Bom.

    1. Yeah, as long as you discount them being a 4-member group with the same sound & style of 2NE1 then there's no comparison

    2. This reminds me a lot of "I Love You" era 2NE1 and honestly, being a knock-off version of that era of 2NE1 is a compliment, not a bag.

    3. So...edm basically, the staple of all K-pop songs. This has a different pace, genre (this is house), even there are raps which I Love You didn't.

This is all just confirmation bias!

  5. I really like this song and I would vibrate inside of Rose.

  6. The song is definitely alot better than their debut, but it's nothing great

  7. Lisa looked attrocious in the first shots and MV, but she's starting to look ok.

I think this song could have benefitted from a punchier bass and higher BPM.

  8. "This is the upbeat electro-pop song 2NE1 should have released a long time ago."
No, absolutely not. This is the flat "just kinda ok" songs they released in their later years.

    1. Yeah, this reminds their I Love You-era so much.

    2. Calm down, I didn't expect people to legit get pissed over that. I loved "I Love You" era 2NE1 anyway.

    3. Why are you writing "Calm down"? That is never a good way to start anything, which I'm sure you are aware of. It just sounds condescending and has nothing to do with anything. The two strongest expressions in my short comment were "absolutely not" and "flat", so I'm not sure why you think I was blowing steam out of my ears while writing those two short sentences.
But thanks for getting me riled up about that now.

I like "I love you" immensly too, but I was actually talking about their 2013 and 2014 stinkers that were so flat and just languished on for the few minutes they lasted.

    4. No I wasn't aware of it, and I've never had anyone get pissed at me trying to tell them to call down before.

Anyway when I said "Years ago" I was referring to the stinkers they released in 2013 and 2014 not the great 2009 "To Anyone" 2NE1 or their 2010 and 2011 stuff. I don't think YG will ever be able to top that era of 2NE1 tbh.

  9. Their best effort indeed, but still not great. It just reminded me how much I fucking hate YG raps.

Unlike others I'm just not attracted to any of them, Jisoo is pretty but plain, Lisa looked fine in the teasers but looked retarded after debut, and the other two aren't anything impressive.
