[MV Review] BLACKPINK - "Stay"

Blackpink has released two new songs that are actually good. Naturally I'm going to review the lesser of the two since bad news should always come before good news.

When Blackpink first debuted I didn't mind "Boombayah" and hated "Whistle"; after listening to them a few more times I came around to liking both, however they weren't anything great in my ears. But the girls are fun, pretty, talented an deserve more than YGs shitty superiority-media play so I'd be on the look out for the group should they release anything in the future that was truly great.

"Stay" is the "Whistle" of this release, but's no where near the same level of yolo-trap lord. It's an okay acoustic ballad that utilizes a softer side to the group. The verses are quite mellow and melancholy, however they build into an upbeat and peppy chorus that gets enhanced with harmonica. It won't be everyone's cup of tea however I can see it doing well with the ballad crowd. As for me, I'll listen to it on the album but it's not something I see myself purposely seeking out unless I want to feel like I'm in a McDonald's commercial.

The music video holds quite a few cool scenes, my favorite being the one of Jisoo on a swing made out of chains and a skateboard in the middle of some post-apocalyptic city. The rest of the video follows the same trend of pretty and visually stimulating tumblr aesthetic. The girls beauty is no joke here.

Overall this was chill and pleasant enough, it didn't put me off as quickly as "Whistle" (which gets an acoustic version on this mini) however it's far from my favorite Blackpink song.

I'll just leave this cool shot here.

  1. This song is so boring, at least Whistle had a good bridge, but this one doesn't have any part that stands out to me, plus I hate folk music.

And oh my, BP fans might be the most delusional fandom after BJs. First putting down Red Velvet and now Twice. Not surprised.

    2. Yup, I saw those comments under Russian Roulette & TT MVs too...But I don't think they're that terrible, there are worse fandoms I know.

    3. The fact that you've never visited bp's videos with twice's roaches creeping in says something about how one-sided you are, you've lost credibility for that.

  2. Both Playing With Fire and Stay were incredibly boring to me- I couldn't finish both of them.

  3. What an immensly boring and generic ballad.

  4. YG's double releases basically include a ballad and a relatively more upbeat song. I didn't like this ballad that much, but it's not terrible either.

  5. I liked this song. But then, I also like Simon and Garfunkel, so maybe that is why. I have two observations about the lyrics, however:
    1. My sweet scent is NOT a felony because I am pretty sure that y'all are over 18 YOA.
    2. Blackpink seems to be in a codependent relationship with someone, which makes the upbeat folk chorus really strange.

    1. What an utterly bizarre way to bring up Simon & Garfunkel.

    4. Well, ok. I guess we hear things a bit differently, but that is why I mentioned Simon and Garfunkel.

    5. Yeah nah. Aside from the acoustic guitar and harmonica instruments being used, this dirge sonically has NOTHING in common with 1960s Folk!

  10. This song almost gave me AIDS. Pretty girls wondering around a post-apocalyptic city can't save a re-thread of Big Bang's turgid "Let's Not Fall in Love".

    1. Isn't this more like "If You"? But yeah, you're right about it.

    2. Don't listen to YG groups without a condom.
