[MV Review] Twice - Chwol Up

After weeks of hyping up their comeback, "Cheer Up", or more commonly known as "Chwol Up", has been released.

Nayeon cements herself as the best Korean in the group with this comeback. I had to start this review with something positive.

"Cheer Up" could have been a very good song, or at the very least, a good song. There's a long of positive elements in this song, but each one is mirrored by something just as bad, or in some cases, even worse. I've listened to the song several times already and I still have no idea if I like the song or dislike it. It's not like SNSD's "I Got A Boy", but it's not anything great like BoA's "Lookbook".

One of the best part of the song is the chorus. It is fairly good, with an easy-going melody with a strong bass to back it up (without being overbearing). However, the chorus is ruined at the same time with horribly mispronouncing "Cheer Up" as "Chwol Up". I have no idea why they decided to pronounce it that way when a Korean would normally say it as "Chee-uh".

I do like a lot of the verses, but despite how nice they are, they do not mesh well with the chorus. Even Twice's "Like Ooh-Ahh" transitioned well from the chorus to the verses and vice-versa. "Cheer Up" is really a gigantic mish-mash of unrelated pieces of music mashed together. I thought after f(x) had perfected the mash-up with "Red Light" that we wouldn't be reliving 2013's shit of having mix-and-match random songs together.

Ultimately, what saves the song from being utter shit is that the individual parts are good enough to listen to, but as a whole, this song is unremarkable. It's listenable, and definitely watchable since Twice is the most attractive girl group at the moment, but I don't see this being heavily rotated in anyone's MP3 player except for the most die-hard Onces.

  2. Are Twice really visually superior to AOA?

    1. AOA are old and busted and full of plastic

TWICE are young and mostly natty except for Nayeon's nose.

Tzuyu > Seolhyun/Dongdong. TWICE Mina >= AOA Mina and no TWICE is Chanmi or Jimin tier. AOA's main advantage is in the boob department, Jihyo's the only one from TWICE with a notably big rack.

Twice also seem to be a lot more visually appealing to girls as well as guys whereas AOA is more about being titillating to the boys

    2. full of plastic? you mean everyone in kpop?

    3. The average age of AOA members is 22 (22.5 if you want to nitpick). That's hardly old and busted.

    4. Twice's main advantage is that they are younger. There's no real visual hole in Twice (as in Hyoyeon/Bom level), but I find Chaeyoung and Dahyun to be unremarkable.

    5. I think Dahyun is killing it in this MV tho. That hanbok look is divine.

    6. Also, age is one thing, but rookie groups with good songs are really on the rise right now. AOA is really have to step up their game, not to mention that they have been out for a little bit too long now.

    7. Well the average age of twice is something like 18 so in kpop terms AOA is old and busted in comparison given how long 4 years is in the industry

    8. I agree with the Dahyun comment. She looked gorgeous in her hanbok, and she pulled it off very well. Plus Momo in that outfit and those guns - I would love to see her as some cool, strong female lead in an action movie. She looked amazing.

    9. Jungyeon is the biggest visual hole but then again she looked so much better before debut with long hair

    10. If you made a group with just the four foreign members, they would be the top visual group. The Korean Twice members, while still good-looking, bring the average attractiveness level down a bit.

I'd still say AOA and Girl's Day are contenders for the top spot.

    11. I agree with the other two on Dahyun, she looks so great in the traditional clothing.

  3. Mina in the black and white scenes. Holy shit go back and watch it.

    3. I grew to like "Ooh Aah", but I liked "Do It Again" on the first listen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lACXsSeWhe8

    4. I particularly enjoy "Precious Love," a song of their new album. I hope it becomes the new "Do It Again," where they perform it at music shows sometimes.

    5. That's the one JYP wrote. Sounds like a 2PM song. I like it a lot but Headphone 써 is the best.

    6. I think Page Two overall is slightly better than The Story Begins. Jury's still out on Ooh Aah vs Cheer Up for me (both took some time to grow on me but Ooh Ahh is one of my favourite songs now and Cheer Up is rising up that list)

Touch Down is fantastic and I quite like Woo Hoo as well.

  5. After a whole day of looping the album I've got the song pretty solidly stuck in my head in a good way. I think it will be a slow grower for most people.

  6. I think you give the chorus too much credit. Even with the terrible pronunciation it is utterly forgettable. I know catchyness is not the be all and end all of a good song, but the fact that i can listen to the song, and ten minutes later forget what the whole thing even sounds like is unfortunate.

  7. to me it still sounds way too much like CHURRO BABY

  8. I think the MV is awesome, especially that one scene with Mina staring into the camera. If I were a guy I 500% would've jizzed in my pants.

  9. Nayeon looks like a rabbit

  10. I love it, but thinking about it, I might be a die hard once. Oops. I have no knowledge on music production, nor do I really care, because if a song is catchy to me, I like it.

Also, I've read that them saying "Cheer Up" is actually a korean word that JYP thought was similar sounding enough to "Cheer Up," but that's probably not the case, and if not, why didn't they try to make them say "Cheer Up" with more of an "ear" sound in "Cheer?"

The only thing I'm disappointed about is the lack of any really great dance break like in "Like OOH-AHH," but if they do their live performances similar to "Like OOH-AHH," where they would change up the dance break (i.e. The "Better think about it Twice" line where Momo does hair flips is changed to focus on another member, such as when Dahyun doing peace signs, or Momo and Sana doing a leg lift at the same time). One thing is certain, I'll be watching all their live performances, so we'll see if they add better choreography for the "Be a man, real man, gotta see you love me like a real man" part.

  11. I already know this song is gonna grow on me. Its giving me AOA Heart Attack vibes which I hated until their live performances.
Also hoping the performances have better choreography because this was weak sauce. Momo looked amaaazing. Tzuyu's parts were my favorite.
The chwol up is really killing me because like how long did it take them to realize the girls couldn't pronounce the word???

    1. I think they tried to write the sounds for them in hangul and fucked up, like 첼업 or 치얼업. It's not too uncommon to transliterate so the singers can just read the sounds without learning any english. Westerners do it all the time, too.

    3. Just skip to 3:21, this is their song "Touchdown" it has better choreography than Cheer Up, and apparently Jihyo said their going to perform this one at music shows like they did with Do It Again.

  13. Jihyo looks latina/mexican with that hair and contact lens. During Ooh Ahh she looks like a filipina. Make her look british next time

  14. I love the song and video.
Is it me or did the stylist step up their game with Chaeyoung and Jihyo?
The album is pretty cool too, I like that it's real upbeat stuff.
