[MV Review] BTS - 'Run'

After some trolling and teasing, BTS close their "Most Beautiful Moments in Life" era with "Run." And it's quite the high note to end on.

What I like about "Run" is that it's a sound BTS has never tried, but it still remains a great song. It's this upbeat dance number that sounds the closest they've ever come to a mainstream pop song, while keeping the typical angst and addictive qualities of their past tracks.

The song starts off exciting and keeps its fast pace right until the end. It goes from rapping to singing quite a bit and never really gives enough time for one to let either sink in, but that plays to the song's strengths rather than it coming off as a jumble of voices. The bridge doesn't even go too soft (at least for my liking). It's obvious BTS probably won't be able to top "No More Dream" (which is in my top 3 k-pop songs ever), but as long as they remain consistent and steadily putting out quality songs (which they have), I'll consider myself a stan of theirs. That's more than I can say for another boy group that had multiple comebacks this year, only one of which was even half as good as "Run."

The video is an obvious continuation of "I Need U." But while "INU" was all doom and gloom (a great video but still depressing), "Run" is all over the place, and I mean that in a good way. I won't go into detail about the story-line, because there are theories all over the place and nobody on this site really cares about that. So I'll just cut to the chase: Yes, all the members look exceptionally hot like they always do. In fact, I'll go out on a limb and say this is their best video yet in terms of each member being fappable, which is saying a lot since BTS's videos usually hit the nail on the head when it comes to styling their members well.

Of course, Jimin being too good to be true

The only downside to the MV is there are no dance cuts, but that's minor since the live stages will more than likely have dancing.

Other than "Run" being a damn great song, some of the album tracks are pretty good, too. I really like "Butterfly" (yes, the ballad is actually one of the better songs) and that Kendrick Lamar "I" remake, and the rest of the album is also pretty listenable. However, those who fall ill to yoloswag shit should pass on "Baebsae."

The only thing I'm praying for is that knowing how Big Hit promotes BTS, there will probably be a followup MV for one of the songs from the album, and I'm praying it's not "Baebsae." Sure, I like it (to an extent that is), but I don't see them getting anywhere with that song. I'm hoping they'll give "Butterfly" or "Ma City" a MV, because they're overall just more appealing songs. "Ma City" in particular has appeal for people outside Seoul since none of the members grew up in Seoul, and it's basically them talking about what they like about the cities they grew up in. And "Butterfly" is just easier on the ears.

Overall, I'd say BTS has another good comeback under their belt with "Run," and it keeps up with their already good discography. While I'm a bigger fan of their older stuff, it's not like they've turned into a group that releases shit after shit with each new release.

Side Note: I'm surprised no one got out of their car in that tunnel scene. I don't care how much I love BTS, if someone blocked a tunnel and then proceeded to vandalize and stomp all over my car, they'd be getting a bat to the face.

  1. I have no fucking clue why, but I've been playing "Baebsae" on repeat for the past couple of days and trying to convince myself that it isn't trap. Probably because I have shitty music taste.

    1. I enjoyed it to an extent but I really just don't want them to release an MV for it. That song will get them nowhere. What groups have been able to win with a trap song besides YG artists?

  2. I saw someone disliking 'Run', stating that BTS "turned into tumblr" over the past year and that it's so different from the "hip hop that made them different". I wanted to laugh at that statement, but then I remembered how I reacted to 'Danger' the first time I heard it (I gave BTS a go days before 'Dark&Wild' was released, listened to pretty much their entire discography and totally got caught by Cypher pt.2). I thought it sounded different from their older releases too, so 'Danger' is a total grower to me and then I realized it's not so bad after all. Now I've learned to appreciate the 'different-but-still-the-same' style of the newer BTS songs like 'I Need U' and 'Run'. I usually never expect anything to avoid disappointment, but when it comes to BTS' music, I'm always positive they'll release good stuff.

It seems it's not 'Butterfly' that's getting the follow-up MV though, they performed it earlier on Inkigayo right before 'Run'. It's kind of hard to guess which song it'll be but I'm also hoping it's not 'Baebsae'.

    1. I'm praying it's "Ma City" then. Everyone's saying it's going to "Baebsae" but I sincerely hope it's not.

  3. The chorus was a bit soft for me though, I wish the second verse of it had a stronger Jimin line, the tone he goes for in We are Bulletproof Pt.2 but with the softer music of the song. And yeah, I don't expect BTS to outdo themselves all the time (I consider Run a bit lackluster compared to INU) but at least they don't disappoint.

Plus look at how lines Jin. What if he decides other members dying in MVs is his route to glory. And thank you for posting an article with more decency than everything AKP has released this whole year combined with their shit about how ARMYs were begging to change the MAMA awarding system when the petitioner wasn't even a BTS fan.

    1. Thanks for the compliment!

Also, AllKpop is a really shitty site for k-pop related anything tbh. I recommend Soompi.

  4. BTS is certainly much better than most boy bands but honestly Jimin's ass is really the only thing the group has going for it.

    3. To be honest I didn't like his visuals at first, but he kinda becomes more attractive the longer you look at him (and even though he is hot as fuck just his ass is a reason to appreciate him).
