[MV Review] Wooyoung - Sexy Lady

A brief reprieve from the Hwayoung-gate scandal, here's a long-awaited review of Wooyoung's solo debut MV.

DISCLAIMER: This review is going to be gif-laden eyecandy for the fangirls, so fellas might want to skip this.

Wooyoung's solo debut came a bit out of left wing since no one was really expecting it, from him least of all. You would think a solo from Taecyeon or even Nichkhun would come first, but that's the way JYP's cookie crumbled.

Anyway, Sexy Lady's MV is straight up dance in a box with "sexy" walking around a club. There isn't even the barest scraps of a storyline that I can bullshit interpret here, so I won't even bother. Unless of course you consider Wooyoung heading to the club and walking around looking for the next bitch he's going to take back to the crib a storyline.

As such, the majority of the MV is fairly standard for this kind of release. Throw Wooyoung and some dancers into a box or two, shine some lights in there for fancy effect, and vary the camera angles for even more fancy effect, and you've got the majority of Sexy Lady's MV in a nutshell. Some dance highlights I found hilarious.

Best new dancemove ever. The seizure fingerbanging/humping ass-slap is genius.
It's like the KPop interpretation of an Irish river dance.
This "ottoke" dance bit is the point dance. At least I think it is.
Since this IS a male KPop star's non-storyline MV, there is a substantial amount of fanservice available for the fangirls' fapping pleasure. It wouldn't be a 2PM release (solo or otherwise) if there weren't the basics present. There's the usual "sexy" smolder closeups, but I ignored those chunks of pyrite for the real gold. Let it not be said that Antikpopfangirl is a male-oriented blog only, Zaku delivers for our women readers as well.

"THRUST ME TOO OPPA, THRUST ME LIKE YOUR CHEAP SLUTS AT THE CLUB"
"FUCKING STRIP, YES UNF CUM TO UMMA"
"SHOW ME  MORE OF THAT BODY I FAPPED TO IN THE MEN'S HEALTH MAGAZINE"
Fangirl: "OPPA WHY ARE YOUR ARMS SO MUSCULAR AND STRONK?"
Wooyoung: "ALL THE BETTER TO FUCK YOU WITH, MY DEAR"
The MV does contain the obligatory dubstep breakdown that seems to be increasing in popularity among KPop releases lately, and it is very awkwardly and tackily added. The whole damn segment is the dance teaser that Wooyoung released prior to the actual mini-album, simply inserted wholesale into the MV. Extremely lazy of you JYP, but he was obviously trying to salvage THAT particular investment.

Aside from robbing Michael Jackson's grave for his pants and shoes, Wooyoung cleaned up fairly well for this comeback. The platinum blonde is off-putting, but I'm sure Hottests will fap anyway. He's only in two outfits anyway (three if you count not wearing his blazer as a separate outfit), and all of those are suits. It's pretty hard to fuck up a suit, so it was a safe choice on his end. At least he's not letting JYP dress him.

The song itself is a typical summer club banger. But don't get me wrong, that doesn't mean it's a bad thing at all. I personally enjoyed the pounding beat and the blaring synth this song brings to the table. 2PM, let alone Wooyoung, aren't the strongest of singers (to put it lightly), so it was nice to see him stay firmly within his range and not attempt any vocal acrobatics (mostly, more on that later). The autotune on his voice, while quite prevalent throughout the song, was applied rather lightly each time so that he didn't sound like Steven Hawking but instead like a Western release's club anthem.

This song doesn't go without gripes though. My primary beef with this song is the attempt at being a real singer Wooyoung makes towards the climax. I didn't need that slow breakdown AT ALL, it was an entirely unnecessary addition to the song that only breaks the flow. Those kind of parts are usually reserved for the main vocals to start belting and earning their keep, but since Wooyoung can't sing for shit, it came off as really weak and forced. Oh and for anyone wondering about the random dance break in the MV, it is thankfully absent from the actual song itself, so it's only a negative for the MV.

Wooyoung stole this off of Jo Kwon's MV too.
Speaking of ripoffs, Wooyoung's solo doesn't really break new ground for him. Solos are usually a chance for people to show off their individual color and charm/talent that they wouldn't have an opportunity to do otherwise within their group. This song, while quite good, sounds exactly like something 2PM would release as a group. Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily, but it's not a particularly exciting release either.

TL;DR:
Wooyoung's solo gets down in da club without any other 2PM oppas cockblocking him at every turn.

+:
  • great club banger for the summer
  • solid visuals
  • plenty of fanservice for the ladies
-:
  • nothing particularly innovative
  • dance break
  • song's buildup to the climax is completely unneeded/unwanted (the more I listen to this song, the more this bothers me)

I give this MV a 3 out of 5, but the song gets a 3.75 out of 5 on its own.

  2. Unfortunately, JayWhyPee isn't stupid enough to have Drunkhun go solo first.

  6. I initially gave it a 4 out of 5 cause I enjoyed it. It's a nice summer club banger, but it's no perfect release as I outlined in the review. I don't expect everyone to agree with my ratings all of the time, lol.

Prolly going to downgrade it to a 3.75 though, the more I listen to it the more that slow breakdown bothers me.

  11. the song was alrightish, but personally I quite like Wooyoung with blond hair. His best look was still Heartbeat, but this isn't horrible.
