[MV Review] Big Bang - Monster

Big Bang's follow up repackage of Alive, "Still Alive" drops with Monster as the title track. HERE WE GO AGAIN, LAWL (Inb4 Big Bang jacked 2NE1's Ugly)

This MV is a pseudo-storyline MV. It doesn't really have a consistent exposition of a real storyline, unless you count brooding and pacing around as legit rising action (If you do, you probably thought Twilight was a riveting adventure novel too huh?). The video opens up with what seems to be a bombardment of some kind of prison camp. The whole thing is shot in shaky first-person handheld camera format, a setup that seems very familiar doesn't it?

OMG IT'S... STILL ALIVE!!
(AWWWWWWWWWW YEAAAAAAAAAAAH)
As nausea-inducing as it may be, I was actually quite stoked to see this intro. Explosions, gritty dystopian feel? It felt like the more mature, cohesive version of Fantastic Baby's "plotline" dressed up in a summer blockbuster Michael Bay would be proud to call his own. But alas, as soon as our first-person perspective makes it to a door and inside the facility, the music starts and all we get is Big Bang running around and/or brooding.

Can't take TOP's running seriously ever since the Big Bang special episode
for Running Man... LOL
They also smash shit too, showcasing their martial ability in an orgy of slow mo and flying plaster(?) chunks.

Why they go out of their way to beat the shit out of some mannequins, I have no idea. Based on the explosions still going on around/inside the building, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the storyline is some kind of escape from a prison facility. Going off the "Monster" theme, it might even be an secret laboratory where BIG BANG ARE FREAKS ESCAPING FROM THE DUNGEONS OF YG ENTERTAINMENT (despite trying to get inside it in the first place). Truth in fiction, some might say.

While this is a more... cohesive set of ideas than Fantastic Baby's schizophrenic clusterfuck of an MV was, ultimately it still falls flat to me. Not only is Monster a waste of a perfectly great story line set up by the intro to the MV, ultimately this MV is just a bunch of oddly dressed/styled guys dancing/brooding around an exploding set. If any other group did this, we'd all join hands in laughing at how stupid they looked and all the random "What the fuck were they thinking?" moments in this MV.

Wat
What were they even trying to go for with this??
(And the movie is "In Time" starring Justin Timberlake if you were curious.)
But since it's Big Bang and YG we're talking about, a lot of the mediocrity is covered up with the Bay-sian explosions and what is quickly becoming YG's trademark "Throw a fuckton of cash at something and call it a day" production style. As such, VIPs are feeding in on this shit by digging for faux-intellectual "interpretations" of how deep and symbolic and philosophical this MV really is.

"OPPAS ARE TRYING TO SAY THAT EVEN THOUGH WE MIGHT BE UGLY AND FAT AND JEALOUS AND INSIGNIFICANT FANGIRLS LITTLEMONSTERS MONSTERS, WE'RE STILL PEOPLE TOO SARANG US FOREVER"

Oh please. If anything, Big Bang is saying "EVEN THOUGH WE'RE DRESSED LIKE COKED UP TRANSEXUALS, YOU'LL STILL BUY OUR MERCHANDISE CAUSE WE'RE STILL BIG BANG UNDERNEATH ALL THIS SHIT." And it is A LOT of shit that stacked on top of them.

Look at that magnificent shroom of hair billow around his head.
Taeyang's down for that bull/cow bestiality roleplay.
In a band of crazy fucked up guys, TOP remains the pillar of consistent good looks.
Fuck yeah, you'd hit that.
The song itself is pretty good. After the autotuned electrodance beats that Fantastic Baby punched you in the face with, Big Bang scales it back with a softer more melodic track. The dueling raptalking bits at the beginning may throw you off, but the rest of the song flows well. No glaring Engrish problems, but my biggest gripe is the brief lull in the song where one would normally expect a climatic vocal explosion. It's really disconcerting for me, but that's just my opinion. The song also fizzles out a bit without really ending on any solid note. "I think I'm sick, I think I'm sick" is weird as fuck.

TL;DR:
More WTFuckery theatrics from Big Bang for a solid follow up track that you might enjoy more than Fantastic Baby.

I give this MV a 3.5 out of 5. (It was originally a 2 out of 5, but since the song is far better than the MV and TOP's badass hat and cape was quite badass, it got an extra 1.5 outta me.)

^ This. I like this review very much. Completely recovered from my Love Song astonishment. But I do think that one deserves 6/5 stars unlike Monster which seems like a masculinized Lady Gaga in an attempt to make it look like it needs literary criticism to look artistic.

  7. I actually really enjoyed the visuals for this MV and even if Taeyang beastly look surprised me first, i grew up to like it. Big Bang will always be the best, because GD & TOP back and forth rapping and Daesung perfect voice (he's really getting better and better).

    1. I love bigbang,....but gd overrated rapping sucks
Top is only good rapper in bigbang
Daesung. . As much as he is underrated in vips heart

Seungri is the higlight in this monster song
I never like him befire. But his smooth voice realy give the chills

Bb should really lay off the autotune...
They got goos vocals..but why u need autotune?
This is why i never call gd as a genius...
Even gd hated being call a genius
That means in korea ppl already calls him a genius

He said he makes songs that the ppl likes
He even said on goshow that he isnt a genius. He just make songs that ppl likes
      Modest. I give him that

  8. The song is decent and the explosions are cool
But BB's visual mindfucks (taeyang's hair) ruined the mv for me
What the Fuck were they thinking?

Same. I feel like he's trying too hard to look cool.
Also TAEYANG WTF is up with your Mickey Mouse hair?! I am disappoint with this vid, considering how high budget it was.

  13. I didn't like this song at first, but it grew on me after a few listenings. I disagree over the 'I think I'm sick' part, though. That's probably my favorite part of the whole song. It makes the tone of the song a little more creepier and 'monster-like'.
But yeah, the video. Good. God. I kinda felt embarrassed for them. GD is a good singer, a good rapper and a helluva song writer. But an actor he is not. Stick to your day job babe.

  14. I really hate this fucking song and I didn't bother watching the music video. I don't give a fuck.

  15. I've long forsaken any hope Big Bang would return to their good old hip-hop stuff, but I was hoping for something at least as good as Tonight and Love song. Both musically and MV-wise, "Monster" is just like any other run-of-the-mill kpop song :/

  16. Can I please get 2006-2008 TOP back? You know the one who actually had a sense of humor and a pulse. I don't know who this douche bag is but he needs to get gone. He looks so boring and uninterested in all their recent MVs. He must be mimicking those VIPs who are about to jump ship.

I'm also going to need Taeyang to stop dipping GD's coke /ganja stash because the boys is just a hot fucking mess from head to toe.

Praise be to Seungri and Daesung who are the only two keeping the sexy and sanity in this group (and therefore keeping me remotely interested).

    GD is a cunt.

This song was boring and the MV makes no fucking sense whatsoever. But then none of their "dramatic" videos ever do. I am still trying to figure out the plot of Tell Me Goodbye two years later.

  17. It's been coming for a while, but yep, this MV definitely solidified my dislike for TOP. He's a do-nothing, prissy little mannequin.

  18. I sort of like Monster... When I first heard it, I thought it was shit, but I've given it a few listens (without the MV) and it's a pretty good song. But it's a bit like Lady Gaga's telephone. The song is good w/o the retarded MV that totally kills it.

And yes, I would hit TOP.

  20. Honestly, if there was some sort of storyline I wouldn't have noticed it anyways cause of their wacky ass costumes. I mean really.....REALLY what the fuck happened to Taeyangs hair? I guess thats what fans get when they ask for a change. And that crazy ass metal S&M shit all over their faces, just. NO.

If any other group would have done this people would be talking about how gay and retarded they look but since its the "oh so creative and totally unique and original BB" its seen as some artsy crap
