Concepts That Don't Suck (Anything But YOUR BLOOD)

A lot of kpop girl group music videos are basically identical. You could swap out the four to nine hot girls for a different four to nine hot girls and end up with at least 90% of modern MV releases.

For example, both Brave Girls and whatever the Produce 101 clusterfuck is called (IOI?) just realized videos with essentially the same concept, which in turn is a thinly veiled rehash of the TWICE Cheer Up tactic, which in turn is a rip-off of this: differentiate your eight thousand members by having them each hang out in a different clichéd setting. That way you can watch the video and be like "damn, the tennis player/nurse/Audrey Hepburn knockoff is sexy," instead of saying "damn, the third girl with long dark hair -- no, not that one, the one wearing pink -- no, the OTHER one wearing pink -- is sexy.")

So what is an embittered management company to do? What concepts can they use without incurring the wrath of random internet bloggers?

The next song will be Crazy. I was always a fan of 4minute (Jiyoon <3) and Crazy is a really good song, so it was pure pleasure to "research" those fancams.

[Concert Review] 4Minute in Sydney 1 September 2013

True confessions time: I've never been to a k-pop concert before... and it's not for a lack of trying.  I had tickets to Super Show 67.3 and that was cancelled at the last minute because the guy who changes the filter in the coffee machine at head office stubbed a toenail or something.  Then I had tickets to K-pop Heart (a big arena event featuring After School, Block B, Ailee, Son Dambi, Teen Top among others) and that was cancelled because the organisers were like "contracts are overrated" and then Block B pissed their label off by demanding three meals a day and pocket money for butter to put on their bread so there went half the lineup.  Both times I flew over especially for that shit and just spent the whole time shopping instead.

So when I heard about 4Minute coming, I was ready to give up on live k-pop in disgust if it didn't happen.

Fortunately, it did happen, so now I finally have a live concert to blog about.  Whether I give up on live k-pop in disgust anyway remains to be seen.

Unnecessary subgroups

Cube has gifted the kpop community with a present for which nobody asked: the debut of project group Double Yoon. This subgroup combines Gayoon and Jiyoon and basically is set up to be the K.R.Y. or TaeTiSeo of 4Minute, aka the "singers subgroup."

Huh, that thing around Jiyoon's neck looks kinda like a nipple ...

Gayoon and Jiyoon are the best singers in 4Minute, hands down. I like them, and I like 4Minute. But come on now, nobody pays attention to 4Minute for the music.

The shocking truth behind the other members of 4Minute

Recently I saw the new Hyuna MV, 'Ice cream' and thought it was terrible, but that's beside the point. I already knew about Hyuna because she's "the-girl-without-eyebrows" in 'Gangnam Style' by Psy. Anyway I was intrigued by her lack of  eyebrows and decided to Wikipedia her and much to my surprise she's actually in a girl group called '4Minute'.

When I read that name I was vaguely reminded of a song called 'Volume Up' which made me go "Huh, I thought that was a 2NE1 song", before realizing that 'Huh' is also a 4Minute song. I know this is confusing but bare with me.

4 Secret Minutes of Drama

The thing about music is that everything builds on something else. It takes influences from things we've done, things we've seen, things only we have experienced in our own unique way and smushes it all together to make a brand new sound. It's only a natural process of creativity, especially in the pop market.

So when 4nias try to start shit with SECRET over their Poison comeback, all I can do is laugh.
