"I Don't Want Kpop To Become Mainstream"

Source.

At first i wanted kpop to spread and become well known but now i kind of don’t want it to. The thing is, i found kpop because i was looking for something that wasn’t mainstream like katy perry or justin bieber. I wanted something that was different. Kpop for me is like my own little world that nobody really knows about. I guess you could say it was like narnia, something special that only a few knew about. But now that its becoming popular i feel like thats been taken away. Don’t get me wrong i’ll always love kpop and i want my artists to get more recognition and gain new fans but i just want to have something thats unique and my own.

s!b: People will think i’m making a big deal out of nothing. And I come across as being selfish for not wanting to share kpop with the world.

"I avoid mainstream music in the United States to listen to mainstream music in Korea. I R SO HIPSTER!"

I've seen a lot of comments like this, especially since Gangnam Style has become a meme worldwide hit. What a lot of people don't realize is that they became Kpop fans because of a hit song. It may not have been worldwide like Psy, but it was definitely a hit in Korea and among Asia. A lot of people got into Kpop around the time when Wonder Girls and SNSD came out with their huge hits. Just because new people get into Kpop through Gangnam Style, it doesn't make someone cooler/more hip just because they got in because of Gee. Stop acting like you were a Kpop fan when H.O.T. was promoting. You're not Sung Shi Won.

  1. Only reason I hate Gangnam Style is all the fucking stupid parodies and people doing the fucking dance everywhere. Holy shit.

At least you didn't hear Gee on the campus radio.

    1. I think it's really funny. Kpop brings some sense of joy to my life that no other music can. Walking into a nightclub in manchester and hearing Gangnam Style is just so weird and hilarious to me.

    2. K-pop will NEVER be mainstream outside of Asia. I honestly think the only reason that Gangnam Syle is popular is because PSY is funny. Not because of the music.

    3. I think the music too, a lot of people where I live in Europe, love the song and never saw the mv.

  2. I am blown away by how stupid this post is. No one outside of the small clique that is Kpop fandom will ever even want to listen to this shit. It will be socially unacceptable if it were more well-known, like anime.

  3. what the fuck?
K-pop is Korean mainstream pop this isn't like the Misfits, Black Flag or Slayer. Well know punk and metal bands but never went mainstream in the United States. Big Bang, TVXQ, SNSD etc are all mainstream acts from the nation of South Korea.
What a pig headed dumb as fangirl bitch.Just because it wasn't know in your country doesn't exempt it from being a mainstream music genre. That is just fucking cultural ignorance at its best.

I fucking hate hipsters I fucking hate them more than fucking emo kids

    1. Fuckin' sell outs. I remember when K-pop was underground and it wasn't about the money. When idol groups toured in a van twice as old as they were and they sold their music in shitty handmade zines. Now they're flying in private jets and having photo shoots in Maxim. XDon't forget the streets, don't forget the struggleX

      Delete
    2. 'when kpop was underground'?? Since when was kpop about the struggles and the streets?

      Delete
    3. I'm pretty sure Dan is being sarcastic. Specifically, a commentary on how kpop is "pop" and therefore mainstream and overly pandered by default, and not underground at all.

oh shit i remember that to brah when idols used fuck in the back seat of a van. Those were the days when Kpop was golden.

      @bonobo

      yeah, that was my point

    7. You're right. Let's completely ignore the same-y presents of composition and themes, and instead focus on the nicely varied gift wrap. LOOK THERE'S A KOREAN ONE!
Mainstream might be relative, but pop isn't, and that was my and Dan's point.

      Delete
    8. Pop is just short for popular and nothing else. Mainstream and pop do not vary so greatly from one another. Mainstream is a fancy way of saying this is popular norm.

There is nothing in pop music that doesn't stray for mainstream culture. Just another variation of it build for commodity. Like anything mainstream if requires a level of conformity. Today pop culture music is universial but the socities within them had made this a cultrual norm.

If you want deep nor mainstream or pop music will give you the realistic point of view of society. Neither are relative

      Delete
    9. Mainstream describes the social aspects and limitations of the definition. Pop describes the substance. If you say mainstream music, you say music that is popular. If you say pop, you say music with standardized formula, cemented scales and chords, and beats per minute. So I stand by what I said. Mainstream is relative due to culture, but the math behind the music of pop is evident regardless of that.

      Delete
    10. @Infamist
Is it possible that a group can be mainstream and be pop. The musical aspect of kpop maybe pop but the substance behind it is very mainstream. Image and context of lyrics (intellectual) is greatly link to the mainstream cultural acceptance of appropriateness that varies to conduct to gender roles. That is govwrn by Korean society of those withing that age bracket.

      K-pop is pop and mainstream

      Delete
    11. Not all pop is popular and not all pop is mainstream. You can't call a genre mainstream, that's too generalizing. It is the artist and the amount of fanbase/casual listeners which makes it mainstream. Therefore I wouldn't call (K-)Pop as a whole mainstream.

      [ I'm not defending any artists ;) ]

      Delete
    12. kpop is Korean mainstream pop culture

      is that good?

      Delete
    13. Is all pop music made in Korea mainstream? No.

Pop is a genre. mainstream is what's popular. Pop is often popular.

Therefore I would say: Pop is a HUGE part of Korea's mainstream MUSIC culture.

      Delete
    14. I also agree with Nadine. Pop is A genre. It's already deviant from what many of you accuse of it plainly as an abbreviation of "popular" because it's NOT anymore. It has its own musical qualities that set it off from other music genres and gimmicks that are also POPULAR in certain countries or regions.

If you consider pop genre as plainly something nominally 'popular' (AKA mainstream), then I guess Mericuns should consider country rather as POP

      Delete
    15. A lot of people also mistakenly merge idol from pop. Not all pop artists are idols; idols do not exclusively perform pop songs (e.g. BEG, SNSD, 2AM, C-Real, IU)

      Delete
  4. I think Kpop is slowly going to become more popular outside of korea, but I don't its going to get to the point where people are busting out some sweet SNSD dance moves at da klub.

  5. K-pop will never get "mainstream," at least not in the way they are thinking. People need to just chill and enjoy it.I would never like something simply because I think others don't know about it, i'd like it because it appealed to me and I enjoyed it as a form of entertainment. It wouldn't matter if 5 or 500 people know about it 'cause i'm not into it for the title sake.

Also, can everyone stop thinking that Gangnam Style is doing some thing for kpop! I have friends who know about kpop through me and still have made zero connection between G-Style and kpop. Even if someone was to dive more into kpop because of it they'd never last because most kpop is nothing like Gangnam Style.

  6. LOL I'm sorry did the word pop not give away that kpop IS the mainstream?

If they were looking for something different they would have discovered Kpop though someone who doesn't have a wikipedia page and a fanclub name.

  8. It's so fucking annoying when people do this. I've noticed a lot of Kpop fans are really hypocritical. Just the other day a moron was saying they won't listen to Katy Perry "because she's so fake". Really, bitch? Really? Don't put someone down for being "fake" when you listen to Kpop of all genres. And don't act like you're better than anyone else because "you listen to this obscure little genre of music called 'kpop'"

This also ties in with an article someone should write about how Kpop will never become mainstream in the US. Example? Look at the last five winners of American Idol. All White Guys With Guitars. That being said I fully expect that goofy looking mofo from Dream High 2 to make it big here any day.

    1. also if you are referring to me then yes i hate both katy perry and nickki minaj because i think they are fake and untalented/hypocritical etc but that no way meant that i am sonestanning all SNSD members to be goddesses with amazing vocal abilities and are in fact 24 hours perfect angels. it's more unacceptable for me with perry though because she is opinionated whilst idol are pretty much controlled by their company.

no idol has yet to make a remark about respecting religion,...then goes and be sacrilegious themselves. done and done.

  10. Well...I'm was on the same page as her/him,actually.But then I realized something-Gangnam Style Won't get many new fans into K-pop.People think the song is fun, they like the MV,maybe they'll even download it,but they won't search for other K-pop songs.
In my country things are a bit different though...I don't,and I mean I REALLY don't want the fame PSY is getting here. But he's already famous.People that hated K-pop,asians in general are now asking me who the hot chick in the MV is and they wanna learn the dance. They say the song is shit, but they can't stop listening and they've ruined my plans of trolling people in the elevator PSY style, because it won't be funny anymore.Years ago we were begging the Music TVs to play at least one Korean song, and we got an answer: "We won't play those yellow chinese",now Gangnam Style is in the Top 10 and on their facebook pages they're posting Kpop and saying "Wow,the korean pop might actually be the new romanian pop".Bitch,NO. -_-
About the mainstream thing-she/he's right.Korean mainstream is different that's why most people like it.But if they get the world fame, they won't be any different than JB or One Direction. They'll start making the same music videos, the same music and so on,the korean pop that was even heavily influenced by the USA Pop,will lose the little korean twist it had kept.
Plus, imagine this: All of these people actually take interest in K-pop,but only because it's popular. After 2 years from now,you play T-ARA's "Sexy Love" and the same people that were telling you how awesome K-pop is,say "The hell, kpop is such an old thing, why the fuck do you listen to it? It's not a trend anymore".Well,I'd probably slap a bitch if they did that.

  13. Most people are way too ignorant and racist to let "that weird asian music" become a part of their daily lives etc.
as long as there are still enough people who think all asians are chinese and speak "ching chang chong" nobody needs to worry.

  14. Gangnam style is hardly even k-pop;it's a popular song but it's not the music most of these 12 yr old fan-girls listen to. Most of them are still stuck on Shinee, 2PM, BEAST, and SNSD. For the most part I think it's just jealousy; they rather SNSD or 2NE1 or Big Bang get popular "internationally" so they can have more bragging rights. Psy is by-passing all these so-called "top-teir" groups with just one silly song and they don't like it. Honestly the whole kpop wave might die because of Psy, if these groups start thinking they can make it big in the US because Psy is an official one-hit wonder and start trying to promote here they'll lose most of what they had in Korea leaving only those nugu groups that no-one cares about. That's why SM is milking everything they can out of their groups, SM groups won't be able to survive without hallyu wave so they are milking it the best they can. They need the intl albums sales to win "awards".

  17. Finally, someone says it.
I refused to reblog the 'I was a K-Pop Fan before Gangnam Style' shit or something like that and reblogged the longest essay saying kind of the same things in here instead.

This, I saw it coming, nearly most of the fans who come a-new to something end up re-acting like they were genuinely there even before the roots were settled.

Well, I don't give a toss if it becomes World-Wide Mainstream since it's already Mainstream, and what made me start liking more K-Pop, apart from BoA, Se7en and a few tracks, was the fact they were over-flooding the market with groups and dropping their old style a little bit. It was songs like Mirotic over the previous TVXQ style, then, I end up liking the nowadays cheesy stuff over the past cheesy stuff (I never got into SES' but I did liked Fin.K.L.). Oh, and for PSY, props to him for coming viral without even trying it. I liked his previous tracks better, but what he's achieved is impressive enough, he's even made it in my country's radios, and that's the first time something that's not English, Italian, French or Romanian mades it into Spanish radios... except for when Pizzicato 5 made it into our charts.

I guess that if the fever increases, a few posers will drop out from being K-Popers.

  18. but but... i was a small fan in the H.O.T. times D: I even have their albums that i listen to... every.... few years :D

  19. Y'know, I've been hearing soo much bitching about hearing Gangnam Style on the radio, around peoples campus or in their city, and I haven't heard it once here. I haven't even heard a mention of it. I feel so left out. :\

I don't even remember the first Kpop group I listened to. At some point I just went from being crazy about Jrock (mainly Miyavi *cough*) to listening more to Kpop. XD But, I don't see why people get upset about kpop becoming more well known or whatever. If it becomes more well known, you could potentially be able to buy your oppar and unniers albums in local stores. Of course, living in the cultural wasteland that is Louisville, Kentucky, I doubt that will ever happen, but eh. *shrugs*

  20. I wish I was listening to KPOP when H.O.T.,G.O.D.,Shinhwa, 1TYM, Se7en, Rain, and BoA were in their glory days. With a new idol group debuting every five minutes with the same pussy ass girly boys singing the same tired ass songs the genre is becoming a fucking joke. How many new groups debuted this year alone? I'm hoping for something, ANYTHING, to shift the mainstream KPOP industry away from idol groups. A juicy scandal leading to a sudden break-up of So Annoy Shi Tae and Big Bang would be a great place to start. With those Super Senior arseholes being hauled off to the army one by one, 2PM being MIA, Wonder Girls continuing to drown in the sea of irrelevancy, DBSK pronounced DOA, and 2NE1 chasing the Pied Piper known as Will I Am the stars are alligning.

    1. Why is will I am in kpop? He isn't even doing much with 2ne1 but wasting studio time. In the almost 3 years since he started his project with 2ne1 he has only completed maybe one or two songs.

I don't think YG has the confidence to support that female group anymore. Their japanese debut was a waste of time. Even with m-Flo things continue to go down hill. Their fan base was Korea and they should stay there.

      Delete
    2. I get the sneaking suspicion that YG is just not happy with 2NE1. It might be simply for the very shallow reason that none of them (not even Dara) are stunning beauties that are raking in the CF deals and roles in dramas. I think he secretly wants 2NE1 to have a Yoona/UEE and it's not happening. That's why he's trying to push this Jennie trick so hard.

If that new girl group he debuts are even moderately successful it's game fucking over for TWENNY WON. I'll put money on it. You see how he tossed 1TYM/JinuSean/Stony Skunk/Se7en/Gummy to the wolves in favour of Big Bang? 2NE1 should be pissing in their La Perla panties right now.

      Delete
    3. there was an old interview when Cl confuse how Suk called her ugly one time. I don't think he really hides his disapproval very well when he realize he is losing money. And even when speaking about this new group he compare them to SNSD. Why? unless you want to over emphasized how pretty they are compare to the last female group.

In fact when you think about Suk never mention how pretty 2ne1 members are or anything of that notion.

i've been into kpop since so long and i've realised the popularity has increased. When i was younger no one even new about kpop and it was sort of actually better that way. Now mostly younger people in school are like "hey do you know kpop??"..blah blah
